I'm also a vegetarian & haven't really put much thought into pearls. I know that clams produce them over a period of time & since they are produced from a foreign object that enters the clam's mouth I assummed they could be easily removed without much harm to the clam itself but I guess that was blind optimism, because most people eat whatever they catch. Aren't there producers out there though that raise clams only for their pearls? Sorry for going off on a tangent, but I'm just interested.

& to get back on topic, I'm actually liking that necklace posted above!

hmm, now that I think about it I think your right! The outside of the shells are rough but the inside is smooth & shiny so I can see it looking that way, but those types of shells are only found with mollusks that live in the ocean & they'd have to be killed in order to get the shell wouldn't they? I'm actually not completely sure about the process of making "mother-of-pearl." Someone needs to clear it up for me.

Well, I'm turning 29 on Friday, October 20th. I may get it for myself as my birthday present to myself. That, or I'll find something else to splurge on. Thanks for the encouragement!
