Model Citizen: Kirsi Pyrhonen
Kirsi Pyrhonen, the 5-foot-11.5″ Finnish stunner is a rare sighting in New York, not only because she looks unusual and almost elfish with her cherry puckered lips and slanted eyes (and towers above everything and everyone on the street), but mostly because she is always busy elsewhere. When she’s not shooting in Europe with Testino, i-D or any of the Vogues, she’s at school or at home with her parents just outside of Helsinki, or walking her dog at their summer retreat in the middle of the country. So when I found out she was in town, I snagged her in between castings for a one-on-one with Joos.
NATALIE JOOS How old are you?
KIRSI PYRHONEN Seventeen, turning eighteen in December.
NJ Are you a Capricorn?
KP What is a Capricorn? I’m the one who shoots his arrow.
NJ Ah, you’re a Sagittarius. Are you interested in astrology?
KP Not really, but sometimes I read the horoscopes in my mom’s magazines and I think “This is silly” but then there’s truth in it somehow. A few years ago I read my horoscope on my birthday and everything that was written, was happening that day. We had a really good laugh about it.
NJ What do u like to do for fun in Finland?
KP During summer I like to go sailing. I hang out with my friends and family—I don’t get to see them that often. We go to our summer house. It’s located somewhere in the middle of Finland, in the middle of nature. It’s really quiet; there’s very few people around. I might be walking my dog and not see a single person for miles.
NJ Do you like the city?
KP I like the city too. I like the energy. It’s crowded, but there are so many different cultures here. What’s amazing is that you can walk for a few blocks and be in a totally different cultural hub.
NJ How are New Yorkers different from Finnish people?
KP Finnish people are more shy and modest. New Yorkers are more social. When I’m jogging people will cheer me on! It’s kind of inspiring.
NJ How did you become a model?
KP I was discovered at IKEA when I was 13 years old. My mother agent found me but my mom said I was too young to model. I always kept it in the back of my head though. Then a few years later, my mother agent found me again on IRC-Gallery, it’s like Facebook but just for people living in Finland. And I decided to go for it. I told my mom I was going to the city and the rest is history.
NJ What is the best thing about modeling?
KP Traveling, meeting new people, seeing different places, working on the best shows…. The feeling you get when you’re on top of your game is amazing.
NJ I know you have exceptionally large feet. Has that ever gotten in the way of your career?
KP Let me tell you, Vaseline is my best friend during the shows. I could not walk in those shoes without Vaseline. When people ask me if I enjoy the shows, I say yes but have them imagine the pain I’m in standing and walking in shoes that are two sizes too small for half an hour. It’s really painful.
