Lakshmi Menon

You guys are unfair to him! His job is to pick the girls according to the client's vision. If they say 'no ethnics' then he can't use her. If you check the website you'll see he cast Jourdan and Chanel in other shows. Lakshmi looks older than all the other models too, so she has a double disadvantage.

That doesn't mean I don't have the right to express my disgust with the industry's race politics, which he is certainly part of.

See, when I read that comment he put under her name it seemed to me that the tone suggested HE was mad about it too, the ... to me suggests that he'd have a lot more to say on the matter, but wouldn't, because then he'd be in trouble with the client.. It seemed to have kind of a bitter undertone.. Perhaps that's just me xD

She is a beautiful girl though, I clicked the thread because she had a pretty name.. But then I realised I recognised her from the Viktoriya thread. I love her hair, it looks like silk; it's so shiny!

imo, casting Jourdan and Chanel doesn't mean anything at all when it comes to this. He praises Han, Jourdan, Chanel, and all the other models but when it comes to her, he had something negative to say. The comment was uncalled for because it's like he saying.."oh there is no room for brown people, we only need blacks and asians to show the world we are diverse" which raises questions in my mind.

just my thoughts..

That comment infuriates me like you wouldn't believe. Sickening, disgusting, gross. is only comment is that she's *gasp* not white??? Like, how dare she have brown skin and eyes and black hair?

The more I go over it, the more understandable it is that he would say that. He's just addressing the fact that there is a 'white girl' trend, not supporting it necessarily. The girls he settles on are neither an indication of his bravery nor his views on race because the criteria has been handed down to him from his clients. Since the focus of his comments was the girls' activity in the New York shows, his comment about Lakshmi is simply the what and why of her situation: she didn't do the NY shows, because clients wanted white girls. Better to call it out for what it is than to give some bogus reason like 'she's too raw.' I think we're making this a bigger deal than it is.

I don't think anyone is making it a bigger deal than it is  I think it's straight up racism and I don't appreciate it, plain and simple.

^Well yeah, and I didn't say otherwise. All I said was that the casting director is not the one to blame. Anyway, maybe we just have different opinions.

^Yes, but the racism is at the clients, not at this casting director...I mean read the comments he made on Du, Han, Jourdan and Chanel. Designer like one Asian, one black girl in their shows but hold your horses, an Indian girl? Not gonna happen....at least, not in FW 0809 ;)

Eh, that's the circular logic of the fashion industry. It's not the designers, it's the casting directors! It's not the casting directors, it's the magazine editors! It's not the magazine editors, it's the models! It's not the models, it's the designers!

So I'll go ahead and blame them all (minus the models) since they all love to blame each other :p

lol and its not the designers its the public....

I just dont think favored her much. Ur not always going to be everyones cup of Tea....It just so happens that he does much of the substantial casting in NY!
BTW ...Indian Elle shots are GORG!

He'd obviously cast Chanel and Jourdan (in addition to Han), as they're pretty much the only non-white girls being cast in shows. A few non-white girls on the runway is better than none at all, but, still, it's almost as if clients are saying that the runways are 'diverse' merely by booking the same black and East Asian girls time after time, those girls being Chanel, Jourdan, and the like. When one "big" person books those girls, well, everyone wants to book them! I agree with everyone in the sense that it is just a game of "who-blames-who".

That guy in the picture above looks like he has no idea what he is doing to her hair, and Lakshmi doesn't look to happy about it!:ninja:

That's exactly what I was thinking too :flower:

He did cast her for the Stella McCartney show...so it seems like his clients in New York just didn't respond to her at all which is a shame.

Lakshmi has an ed in the july issue of Biba (a french mag). It's shot by Benoit Peverelli and styled by Alina Caraman.
