MADE IN HEAVEN
"THINK of the jeans Jane Birkin would have worn in the South of France in the Seventies – it's denim that is the total antithesis of the American cowgirl, rock 'n' roll thing," says designer Chloe Lonsdale. As the daughter of Seventies supermodel Chekkie Maskell and Tony Lonsdale, who originally shot the Made In Heaven denim label to fame with his famous Jean Machine store on the King's Road, Chloe's designs are bound to be cool. Featuring flattering reverse yolks and hand-stitched tuxedo strips down each leg, they look as good as they sound, too. The label was founded in 1969 by Chloe's godfather Tony O'Gorman – who is still on hand these days for any advice she might need (and who employed a young Betty Jackson on his original design team) – and they'll be available exclusively in Harrods from July with a view to being in all the most stylish denim collections by this time next year. "It's about capturing the essence of an aspirational lifestyle," says Chloe. It's the subtle differences that make the difference." Having graduated from Central Saint Martins six years ago and subsequently learning her trade at Nicole Farhi before deciding to breathe new life into the iconic brand, Chloe plans to add to the range each season with sexy extras like vintage Grand Prix T-shirts and retro sweaters for the St.Moritz crowd – as well as gorgeous denim minis and straight legged short-shorts for the most slender, golden-limbed among us. Jane Birkin, eat your heart out. For more information, visit www.madeinheaven.co.uk. (May 24 2005, AM)
