Maison Margiela Haute Couture F/W 2021.22 Paris

Is it just me or is the sound kinda f'd up on the movie?
Something's wrong with the sound.

The collection itself is wonderful and full of passion. There is a lot of beautiful pieces such as the sweater made of knitted squares or the dramatic white coat with patchworked blue bandanas and pieces of fabric. The story-telling is really engaging, too and I must say, I enjoyed the movie. However, the looks are killed by Vogue Runway. Why did they insist on using the gifs? It's literally a sabotage, because we can't see anything. The most laughable gif is the one with Lulu in the cracked mirror dress.

he really makes me cringe
doesn't he believe in his own work? why hide behind fussy photography and theatrics?

and who has time to look at such a long video and listen to all that nonsense, just give us good clothes and spare us the rest.

I thought it was a neat idea to bring his narrative to life so we could all see what informs the clothes. But idk I feel like the film was a bit ridiculous. And it's hard to tell what that clothes even are... I wish in addition they'd just put out those images they briefly show in the film of the full length front/back/side on the white background so we can tell what's going on. They keep talking about transparency but like what is transparent about this besides showing the narrative? They aren't really showing us the clothes or the process. They're showing us the performance. I got more of a marketing ploy vibe from it so they can sell their basic stuff to people who enjoyed the film. And by the way, I have heard some tidbits of info on the RTW for spring 2022 that this will trickle down into... it is s o o o o. f*cking expensive it's not even funny.

Also if you want the look descriptions and show notes etc just dm me

Yeah...I just feel like fashion films will never, ever truly replace the catwalk show. You never are able to truly see the clothes the way you should. This is why the runway will always be the be-all-end-all.

As a supplemental marketing tool? Sure. Give us a film. But a film alone always leaves more to be desired.

Also, I think this production doesn't help Galliano's clothes. What was so electric about his Dior and his namesake label during the 00's was that these oftentimes very literal historical garments were contrasted with glamazon models like Gisele or Carmen, they were shown on the mirrored runway with dramatic lighting, and they were shown with blaring, ingenious, infectious remixes of pop music by Jeremy Healy. It gave the historical influences a whole new reason to exist and a whole new relevance and desirability.

This is far too literal. I want to see those pilgrim jackets in a new context...I don't want to see them in Jamestown circa 1619 on famished models.

oh boy, what a mess. Galliano for Margiela is a disaster from day one. A cool house destroyed by tacky old fashioned circus clowns

at least he has the decency to call it ‘Artisanal’ because this is not Haute Couture.

kudos to John to still keep playing with fashion and showing us that his creativity and geniality are still at his peek.

the whole idea and video are interesting but we do want to see the clothes too.

I know his brand name does not belong to him, but couldn’t he create another one? who cares if it’s nit John Galliano or Galliano or JG, call it something else.

The movie was far too much, it could have used a good trim and I would definitely recommend shooting a simpler lookbook on a plain background! With that out of the way I can say the clothes were all over the place but at least they are kept separate in different "chapters" of the story...I'll stay with the post-apocalyptic early CdG closing section although I do like the jackets with basting stitching that the peasants are wearing and the patchwork dress was, for me, the real climactic moment of the whole narrative and collection.

I love when they do these type of stories. The clothes are nice, could've been better? sure, but there are a couple of very interesting pieces from this.
