Wonderbra’s New Face Revealed
Fashion Wire Daily October 6,2004- NEW YORK - It may not be one of the official wonders of the world, but for many visitors to New York City, a trip to Times Square is at the top of the list of "must see" attractions. The myth that surrounds this triangular heart of Manhattan is no doubt due to its infamous billboards, flashing neon signs and of course, the annual New Year's Eve ball drop at 1 Times Square.
So Wonderbra, whose cleavage-enhancing bras have taken on mythic status of their own, chose an apt location to celebrate their 10th anniversary. With much hype, they launched a new ad campaign on a billboard in Times Square featuring the latest addition to the Wonderbra roster of cleavage — Maja, Yugoslavian model and current face of the new campaign.
Sandwiched between a McDonald's sign and above a T.G.I.Friday's restaurant, the billboard remained covered until 10:30 a.m., with only the model's cleavage exposed. Then, with a countdown in the tradition of New Year's Eve, the tarp came down along with Maja in-person, who stood two stories above street level in a lift that slowly lowered to the ground.
"We looked worldwide for Maja," said Diane Ridgway-Cross, Wonderbra Marketing Manager. "We looked at more than a thousand women, but we really found her to be the spokesperson for Wonderbra because she's so dynamic, and you just feel her energy. She's very sexy, confident, empowered — what women aspire to be. She's also very approachable. She embodies everything that Wonderbra tries to bring to a woman."
Approachable, clearly. Photographers and onlookers rushed across the street to get a glimpse (and a snap) of Maja, who sported the same Wonderbra modeled in the billboard — a brave feat on her part, given the chilly October temperatures and the throngs of people scrambling to get a look at the scantily-clad model. Guess that's where it pays to be confident!
Maja told FWD how it felt to be fully on view in Times Square, saying "It feels amazing! I'm very happy that I’ve been chosen as a Wonderbra model and I can't explain how happy I am, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Wonderbra."
With taglines like "Yes they are, thank you," in reference to the question on everyone's mind, "Are they real?" the sassy campaign will be unveiled in cities nationwide.
Can't beat the fanfare of a Times Square launch, though.
