What a very clever choice for an issue based on LA, seriously. I am going to go and listen to Pet Sounds now. B)

MEN IN GRAY: Man About Town, a Paris-based biannual men’s title edited by Philip Utz, saved oodles on retouching and color printing with its spring/summer issue, which hits newsstands next week. It’s devoted to Hedi Slimane’s Los Angeles and is filled with his signature black-and-white photography, from the lined face of Brian Wilson on the cover to his more familiar cast of skinny youths, including Agyness Deyn in full tomboy mode. Slimane also rounded up a cast of cultural movers and shakers across the indie and legend spectrums, from music mavens Wavves and Beck to the writer Gore Vidal and artist John Baldessari. The 268-page issue features cheeky interviews with designers Rick Owens and Giorgio Armani and many fashion shoots with scant amounts of clothing.

Oh no...a Hedi Slimane issue ...this is like the only good men's mag gone seriously wrong. And the font looks like VMan now :(.

Man About Town, Philip Utz’s biannual men’s mag, may be Paris-based, but its next issue takes Los Angeles for its theme. And who better to steward its westward course than Parisien-turned-Angeleno Hedi Slimane? The former Dior Homme designer has spent the last several years shooting disaffected youth in L.A. Even sunny California couldn’t brighten up Slimane’s trademark moody images, shot mostly in black and white. “This issue is all about the creative or artistic community in Los Angeles, not the well-known Hollywood side, but rather the subcultures, something like a tribute to ‘indie California,’ ” Slimane told Style.com. “Brian Wilson had therefore to be on this cover, a mythical Californian figure still inspiring the punk rock scene today with vibrant bands such as Wavves or Best Coast. This issue is mostly about portraiture, from iconic artists or writers (John Baldessari, Kenneth Anger, Chris Burden, Larry Bell, Gore Vidal) to California youth.” The former Beach Boy is Slimane’s cover subject, shot in all his well-creased glory. “Brian Wilson is legendary for me,” Slimane explained. “He still embodies the ’sound of California,’ and proved to be one of the most gifted and important musicians of the twentieth century.” The whole issue, the photographer continued, is very close to his heart. “The L.A. portfolio might be somehow one of the most personal and intimate projects I have done in ten years. The magazine is almost a complement to Anthology of a Decade [a book of his photos from 2000-2010], coming out this month.” Above and below, a few exclusive spreads from the forthcoming Slimane-filled issue of Man About Town.

The cover is really great, I love the depht in Slimane's photography so a whole issue by him isn't a problem at all.

I, too, miss the old layout :( As much as I like MaT, I don't think I'll be able to handle such a big doze of Slimane photography (which I'm not a fan of).

Sounds like an amazing issue.. I love Los Angeles, and mostly (if not only) for that side Hedi Slimane mentions, its vibrant scene, its artists, stylish people no one ever sees because they're looking at the 'other side' (celebrity/hollywood culture). Total must-have .
