Marina: Face of the Moment

20 years old, 8 of those working, the Madrid model has skyrocketed to next summer's international runways. Milan, Paris and NY belong to the the 2003 winner of the Premio L'oreal Best Model. By Eugenia de la Torriente. Photos by Nico and L'Estrop.

She wasn't discovered by accident at an airport or while accompanying her sister to a casting. Hers is not a fairy-tale beginning. Marina has worked as a model since the age of 12 when her mother put her in an agency. She's almost methodically been through the stages. She started with kidswear and department store catalogs. She travelled to Milan and Tokyo at 15 and won the Best Model award in February 2003 at Cibeles (Madrid Fashion Week). At 17 she landed national campaigns (Mango, Pronovias, Massimo Dutti, Victorio & Lucchino). It was at this time, more or less, she stopped travelling everywhere with her mother. A year ago she decided to try her hand at America and went to New York. She met her boyfriend (from Beverly Hills) and walked for Custo and Imitation of Christ. People talked about her impending mark on the international scene. And after her ads in Italy for Patrizia Pepe, that promise was fulfilled.

The new Marina, at 20, walked for Calvin Klein in New York for Summer 2005. She exploded in Milan and Paris. Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Jil Sander, Roberto Cavalli, YSL, Chanel, LV and Christian Dior, among others. Indeed a feat for a Spanish model. "I know I must take full advantage of this opportunity and now is the time to take it," says Marina whose rounded face has give way to striking cheekbones. Maybe she has fulfilled the the very statement she made back in 2003 on "The Country of Temptations" when she spoke of the rise of Spanish models on the world stage: "It's not becuase we're Spanish. It's that here we look for beauty that's common and abroad they look for a beauty that's a bit less common." On deck for Marina are jobs (like Italian Vogue with Steven Meisel, V and a campaign for Loewe) that could make her the model of next summer.

And the translation for post #708:

Marina Perez: Model
"When my mother put me in a modeling agency at age 12 I didn't really like it at first but I did because she encouraged me. I started with kids campaigns but I didn't like it because I would miss school or couldn't go out with my friends. It wasn't until I was 17, when I started working more, that I realized just how far I could go," remembers Marina Perez, the Madrid model who at 19 years old, has just become a star on the runways of Milan, Paris and New York. This is quite an accomplishment as the presence of top Spanish models at these shows has been token. "It's a privilege to be part of the shows of top designers that are known throughout the world and that everyone admires. This has been my first season in Paris and pretty much Milan because I was there at 14 years old but I was much too small to see all that was happening. In New York I've done Calvin Klein exclusively and in Paris and Milan many more. I opened Missoni and Lagerfeld Gallery and the feeling is incredible. It's an honor to be in a show and even more so to open one. The best? I love Rochas becuase the clothes are so elegant and the shoes are beautiful. YSL was great but it always is. I loved the set at Chanel, a Hollywood feeling, and with great models like Eva Herigova and Linda Evangelista. It was a pity I could attend the dinner hosted by Karl Lagerfeld in honor of Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhmann but had a show the next morning."

When she models outside of Spain, one of the things she enjoys the most is seeing familiar faces. "It's a good feeling seeing the Spanish press saying hello when they see me like when I ran into Belen Antolin, our director of fashion."
Voted the Best Model at Cibeles 2003, the beauty and professionalism of Marina Perez have situated her behind the scenes of major shows. Who better to ask about what goes on like what the designers are like backstage? "The vast majority are nice. Many are backstage supervising everything, adjusting the clothes. Of course some aren't even at the fittings. Lagerfeld, for example, surprised me. He struck me as a very sympathetic man and very involved who gives his opinion about every single change and hairstyle."
Currently on tap is her campaigns for Loewe and Kenneth Cole. On the horizon are many options though some unconfirmed. Her wish, "to work with Mario Sorrenti and Paolo Roversi." The where to be, all over the world. "Right now I don't live in any one place. I'll be in New York for a few months where I'll shoot an editorial and before that I was in Los Angeles and Paris. I'm lucky because my boyfriend travels with me."

In all her comings and goings there are two things she always packs. "I always wear jeans and something black: a tee shirt, jacket, something roomy."

For her, fashion is more than a way of life. "It's my passion because it's not like going to an office. It's an adventure that takes you to a different place every day. My future will be related to it, I'm sure. I see myself doing something artistic, photography, styling or working in editorial but always in the fashion world.
