Marion Cotillard

It's supposed to be a fertility symbol - galliano used them a lot that dior collection :flower:

yep, those are venuses that are old 25 000 years, the most famous one is the one from willendorf and this one looks like it might be from greecian territory (judging by the texture and head shape that's more detailed design). these are made in the honor of women and their fertility and represent one of the earliest sculptures in art itself. :flower:

That's really interesting, thanks so much for the info :flower: IMO the heels are brilliant, they look great on Marion and perk up her outfit - the suit itself is very beautiful, but with the heels the outfit goes from being good to being great.

I read that there was some controversy as to whether having a goddess as the heel of a shoe was disrespectful, but if its based on an ancient symbol which isn't currently worshipped by anyone, I don't see the harm at all. If Galliano had used the Venus de milo instead, I doubt anyone would be complaining

nah, they weren't worshiped, they're just called venuses cus venus was goddess of beauty, though it's still uncertain why these sculptures were made in the first place. the breast part and torso are over emphysized (in the name of lactation and fertility) which made the historians name it the goddess of fertility. what's interesting is that the historians even found traces of red colour on the sculpture which makes them believe that the person who made it wanted to show labour.

i think those heels look amazing and that they aren't invasive. it's art for art.

... oh. that's a godawful picture of Marion, I had no idea it was possible to airbrush such a stunning woman into unattractiveness.

Her top is by Marc Jacobs, isn't it? Anyway, I heard that those Dior fertility shoes have been causing some controversy because people find them offensive.

"Cover Image: Sweater by Marc Jacobs."
All designers of the clothes are on the english interview page !

Exactly. I think the heels are brilliant, and I absolutely adore the fact that she wore them.

Horrible photoshoot! She looks so harsh :(

I quite like the photoshoot, but I agree the lighting is way too harsh.
If done well, like Ellen Von Unwerth or Helmut Newton, high contrast shots can be amazing. But there's no backdrop or scenery to contrast with, so the images just look washed out. I kind of wish a different photog had shot it, they would have been really beautiful.

Thanks for the Black book pics, she looks fab in the silver sequin Versace minidress!

I can't remember if it was on this board that someone was curious as to who this guy is who is always pictured with Marion:

It's Bastien Duval who directed Mon Clown, the documentary of her lead up to the Oscars. I just re-watched it and he appears in the film!
I never noticed before. Anyway! Just thought i'd point that out as they are always photographed together. Not sure exactly what their relationship is.

:)

^I loved that little doc. It was so interesting to see that it's basically a campaign trail that nominees have to follow.

Us In Style July 2009

I think these are from the US version with Michelle Pfieffer on the cover. I'm disappointed Marion didn't score the cover. These images are beautiful.
