Mastermind Issue #11 S/2 2022 : Penélope Cruz by Nico Bustos

This 70s yearbook cover aesthetic is so obnoxious.

Never saw the physical version
Its in hardcover?

^^^Yes, hardcover.

The content is very solid. Much like her soulmate, Nicolas, there’s this arrogance— whether intentional or not, to deliberately prefer an unattractive veneer with beautiful content-- while they have access to every advantage and privilege that people of their status has, like what his Vuitton has become, as some personal statement. Not sure if its arrogance, or the almighty pretentiousness that’s all too common with fashion people. I wonder who influences the other more— her on him, or him on her?

^He influences her more than she does.

Regarding Mastermind, this is a publication with no budget, pure ego centred and MAS wants it to be a publication about culture more than about fashion. The only good thing is that the magazine has some high-quality paper.

The first issue was however really great!

Wonder if Carine Roitfeld will also be working in Mastermind? I also thought that MAS was supposed to be working in CR

I quite like it. It's giving that same commercial vibe that Meisel's studio editorials had in the late 90s and early 2000s. It's particularly reminding me of Gisele's stories with that hair.

I wasnt familiar with her work but was shocked when I saw her runway and print work, she's literally on her way to becoming a supermodel. That said I wonder how they managed to shoot her in an editorial that looks like a dull version of model street style and a generic Catalog for womens suits? Even Macy's or Express suits catalogues look better than that.
