Susan Dimasi and Chantal McDonald founded MATERIALBYPRODUCT in 2002 and launched the label on the international market just 12 months later.
MATERIALBYPRODUCT is a design studio that invents fashion in the true spirit of the avant-garde by exploring conventions and taking design beyond simple modification through innovating the design process itself.
Rather than designing garments, Dimasi and McDonald see themselves as designers of innovative textiles systems; designing new ways for cutting, joining, marking, draping and tailoring cloth results in a signature style that is distinctive and unique to the design studio. The materialised clothing is the by-product of these systems, hence the studio’s name.
The design studio currently trades out of Paris producing two Prêt-a-Porter collections per year. Currently, MATERIALBYPRODUCT is exhibiting in PARA-SITE at “Dysfashional” at MUDAC, Musée de Design et d’Arts Appliques Contemporains, Switzerland from March 11 –June 8 2008; HOW YOU MAKE IT at Craft Victoria, Australia from March 6 – April 12 2008; and REMAKING FASHION at National Gallery of Victoria, Australia from 26 September -12 April 2008. As one of Australia’s most innovative design studios, MATERIALBYPRODUCT is regularly collected by The National Gallery of Victoria. The gallery has acquired pieces from MATERIALBYPRODUCT’s Punch Out 05 transeasonal collection, Spring/Summer 2007 collection and Autumn/Winter 07/08 collection.
