nytimes.comThe Man Behind the Abs
By the time Matthew Terry of Ocean City, N.J., turns 22 next week, he will have starred in a fragrance ad for Calvin Klein and two underwear campaigns, most notably in the ab-tastic commercial that ran during the Super Bowl and made him an overnight celebrity. Not that anyone recognizes him on New Jersey Transit, he said, “not without my hair slicked back and my body covered with baby oil.”
Here, thoughts from his gut:
How To My No. 1 thing is to stay consistent in the gym and on a diet. Everyone cheats. I’m a huge dark-chocolate lover, and I cheat once in a while, and when that happens, I work twice as hard at the gym. I personally like to do circuit training. You’re just hopping from one exercise to another, and I find that works for me. I go to the gym five times a week, for about an hour and a half. If I go with friends, I might go for longer. We like to chitchat.
Mmmm, Chocolate I like Hershey’s dark chocolate. I like chocolate with almonds, too. I could die for that.
Question Asked Most Often Am I single?
Growing Up When I was younger, I was a hundred and nothing pounds. I was a stick. In the seventh grade, I started working out and going to the gym. Being involved with high school sports really helped. I learned a lot of the techniques that I use now, if I need to lean out. If I’m getting too bulky — playing football, you tend to bulk up with muscles, and my shoulders get too big and my neck gets too thick — I do lots of cardio and endurance training. It doesn’t add size, but it gives definition. I’ve been working on my core since, like, the eighth grade.
The Male Gaze Going to the mall and seeing the huge posters of people in Hollister, and Abercrombie, I wanted the chance to do that. But people get the idea that they’ll never look like me. Well, I’ll never look like a body builder or a basketball player. It’s about accepting your boundaries and being able to work with them.
Justin Bieber I’ve never seen his abs. If they are real, then props to him.If not, he’s got a great Photoshop crew.
Mmmm, Abs They are the in thing. Everyone wants to be lean and cut, and ripped is the word everyone likes to use. People get upset why they can’t get abs like this. A good amount of it is genetics. It’s a decent part of the social life. Girls love abs. I’m in the right line of work, I guess.
allure.comIf you watched the Super Bowl this year, you undoubtedly saw the new face (make that abs) of Calvin Klein underwear: Matt Terry. The 22-year-old model is also fronting the brand's new fragrance, Dark Obsession. We spoke with Terry about the scent, what he loves about women, and his own surprising obsession.
How has your life changed since the Super Bowl ad aired?
"I'll go to the local breakfast place and they'll come up and say, 'Congratulations.' It's flattering but freaky. It's like, I haven't even gone on a first date with you and you know what I look like in my underwear."
You're the face of Dark Obsession for Men. What do you like about the fragrance?
"I had not smelled it until recently, and it turned out cooler than I thought. It has a very mellow, pleasant, vanilla-y smell along with a boldness and spice to it. It's not overpowering, which I like, because most men's fragrances are too in-your-face."
Do you remember your first fragrance?
"It's very ironic. When I was 14 or 15 my mom bought me a Calvin Klein fragrance kit. It had Obsession, Escape, and Eternity, along with another one. It's insane that I used to see this on my dresser every day and now my face is on the advertisements."
How do you think a woman should smell?
"I think a woman should smell very comforting—at least that's what I really enjoy. I like a gentle smell."
What's the sexiest thing a woman can wear on a first date?
"I like it when a girl puts in some effort, but not an overwhelming effort. We were out for my girlfriend's birthday and she wore a simple black dress, straight hair, and some eyeliner—and that's all I really need. I'm attracted to her, not what she puts on."
And the least sexy thing a woman can wear?
"The fake tans usually do it for me. Everyone has their insecurities, but it's better to embrace those insecurities and not try to hide. I'm pale. I'm as white as they come."
Have you ever gotten a fake tan for a job?
"For the first underwear ad, they tanned me. I looked like I was another race. For the Concept and Obsession ads, they were both in black and white, so there was no need for tanning. Thank God."
You've said that you typically love blondes. Any celebrity crushes?
"For the longest time, I had a crush on Shawn Johnson, the Olympic gymnast. I was in high school and I was like, I love this girl. I felt like a teenage girl for a couple days. It was ridiculous."
Do you ever tag along for beauty treatments with your girlfriend?
"I'm not opposed to going and getting a back massage. She might have to persuade me to get a manicure and pedicure."
How did you get your body in the shape it's in?
"I try to go to the gym four to five times a week. I warm up for 10 to 15 minutes and then I jump into circuit training. My friends help me go to the gym because it sucks going by yourself. They push me to another level, and it makes the whole process better."
And your diet?
"I give and take. Usually I wake up and have eggs and toast with peanut butter on it. And for lunch, a sandwich and some fruit. Then fish or chicken for dinner. It's one of those things that if you know you're going to break your rules, you have to put in more effort at the gym."
Do you have an obsession?
"Dark chocolate. I'm a dark chocolate fiend—especially with almonds. I can't help myself."
