Shaving with a blade

Has anyone tried shaving with one of those blades that you see in old movies?

Is it true that you can cut yourself easily and leave a scar?

I've also heard that your shavings will last longer? Is this true?

Cut-throat razors give no better a shave than a safety razor. It is true that they cut you more easily and they're known as a 'cut-throat' razor because sailors often slit their own throats by accident with them.

Hah! Good plan If you want to try for yourself though I've seen shops in London and Barcelona which sell them...

PS that sentence about sailors was meant to be in the past tense, I think it was actually the navy who invented razors because sailors kept accidentally killing themselves.

No thanks, you've convinced me.

Risk of a permanent scar or even dying just for a better shaving is definitely not worth it.

Although there's something glamorous about them.

If you can find the right barber you can get shaved with a cut-throat. You can be pretty sure they're not going to cut you as they use one on customers probably several times a day.

I advise you not to go to barbers. Even if you trust them, they could accidently misplace blades etc, and the risk of getting a (S)TD is increased.
Do your own shaving with your own razors, never share them.

it's called a straight blade and any professional barber/shaver uses one.
its for the face though dont use it for arms, legs etc.

Using a cut throat is also not good for your skin.

as they tend to take a thin layer off at the same time,
causing discoloration around the neck and chin

I thought I'd start this thread since there is quite a number of male members here. Plus I think it would be nice to discuss razors, shaving creams and other products we use when it comes to shaving.

What are your opinions on regular blade razors versus electrical razors?

I use the Gillette M3 Power. It's the only razor I've ever used so I can't really compare them with any other types. I don't have any complaints about it!

I use Gillette as well. But shaving apparantley takes layers off your skin, so I'm wondering if I should switch to eletric razor.

Doesn't all shaving take off layers though? I think as long as you use moisturize afterwards it shouldn't be too damaging.

A good shaving cream is essential. Don't go for the drug store brand ones, they contain a chemical called benzocane, which blocks your nerve endings from feeling the pain when you cut yourself. This may seem like it's good, but if you use it a lot it damages your skin.

I have the Zirh shaving gel and it does not contain any of this chemical.

I use LUSH's Ambrosia shaving cream or ones from Kiehl's or Aveda.

Fashion_Boi_01 thanks for that info. I use H2O Plus shaving cream. It's really good and its all natural. I like Lush products however I don't like the maintanance of soaps.
