Obituaries 2009: Michael Jackson

The TV personality, a childhood neighbour of the Jackson family, remembers his close friend the King of Pop, who died of an overdose on 25 June at the age of 50

David Gest
The Observer, Sunday 13 December 2009

The first time I met Michael he was 11 and already really famous – the Jackson Five were the hottest act in the world. I lived down the block from them in Encino. I became close friends with Tito and Michael after I was introduced to them by my friend Mike Merkow at Walton School in Panorama City. Michael was making a pâpier-maché giraffe when I first met him. We talked about art and he told me how he loved painting and being creative. Right away I knew we had something in common – and it was not painting!

I started dating his sister, La Toya. It was puppy love, nothing serious. One day she was sick and Michael asked me if I could take him to a memorabilia show in Glendale. I said, "What's memorabilia?" and he said, "You've got to get into it, David, you'll love it." So I drove him to a show where they were selling lots of old rock and soul posters, gold records, Beatles items and signed items by Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison and the Doors. Michael loved the Doors and their music. He also loved anything Motown as well as real, heartfelt soul. To both of us, James Brown was a god and Jimi Hendrix was his brilliant pupil. After that, we started hanging out three or four times a week and it turned into a best friendship. We were inseparable for the next six years.

One night, when he was in his late teens, we went to The Roxy on the Sunset Strip to see the Four Tops. We went backstage with Stevie Wonder, and Michael says to the lead singer of the Four Tops, Levi Stubbs Jr, "I learned everything from you Levi, everything." Stevie picked Michael up, threw him against the wall and went, "Who did you learn everything from? Who's the greatest?" and Michael said, "You, Stevie! Stop! You!" It was so funny. It was also typical of the Michael and David friendship that would last more than four decades. We would take trips together every weekend just to get away from the house, our parents and be on our own.

We'd get in the car and sing songs together. He used to tell me I was the worst singer he'd ever heard! He always made me laugh. Michael had a great sense of humour which most people never saw. We loved to go antiquing for furniture and paintings as well as memorabilia. Our favourite thing to do was walk into a store and go, "Do you have any John LeCockah paintings?" The antique dealer would respond, "We've just sold the last one for $100,000." I'd say to Michael, "Oh no, he's just sold the last John LeCockah painting." We would plead for him to get another in and he'd respond, "They are just too hard to find." We'd walk out and go, "We'll never buy from that dealer because there's no such painter!" Michael would be laughing so hard. He had a laugh that was like a cackle: Hhk hhk hhk hhk hhk.

We'd do very normal things. We went to KFC a lot. Michael believed that if you took off the skin of the chicken, it was organic. I never quite got what that meant. We'd go out for pancakes and French toast and I'd drive his Rolls-Royce. When we stopped for gas, I'd ask him to fill the tank. He'd say, "I'm the star here. I can't believe you're making me put gas in the car." And I'd tell him, "When we're together, there's only one star." That was the reason our friendship was so good. I never treated him like he was a big deal.

Once, in the 80s, he dressed up as a sheikh and we went to Disneyland to see Captain Eo, this 3D film he was starring in. I watched him doing the Moonwalk, and on the way out I said, "You know, you are really good." He was like, "Are you just figuring it out?"

He was never one to mince words. In the early days, he ran his own career and was in total control. He'd call up the president of Sony and say, "I want a billboard here. In Chicago. In New York in Times Square." He was on top of everything from the marketing to the promotion of every one of his releases and he was sharp. He wouldn't be one to hold back when he got mad. Also, he never talked in that high-toned voice. He was always very masculine, very much a man.

It all changed after the fire incident in 1984. He was doing a commercial for Pepsi and his head caught fire when a stunt went wrong. He was never the same after that. When you have a concussion and are constantly in pain everything in your world changes. Trust me, I know this from personal experience. It's not surprising that he got addicted to pills. I just wish he'd had the right people around him. The truth is that some of the doctors around him were more interested in being his friend than making sure he was OK medically.

Michael was also so concerned with looking good. He had great looks to start with and never needed to do anything, but the plastic surgery was an obsession. He took it too far, and I think he realised that later in life. The surgeon should never have done any more after the second nose-job but people wanted to keep him in the fold, and that was one of the big problems in his life.

When the trial came up in 1993, I was one of the few people who went on every TV show in the USA and said he was innocent. I knew he was innocent. Was it the smartest thing to have all these children on your bed watching TV? No, and I said that to him. But did he do anything wrong? No. Michael wouldn't harm a fly. He wasn't into that.

Michael had a heart of gold. I wish people could know all the kids he helped. Kids who needed prosthetic arms and legs, but whose families couldn't afford them. He paid for hundreds of cancer treatments, but he didn't go around boasting about it. Nobody realised just how wonderful he was until after he died.

He was a very strict father. He believed his kids should be highly educated and have respect for adults. He wouldn't put up with any crap, but he also gave them so much love because he'd been very hurt as a child, not by his mother whom he loved very much, but he was never close with Joseph. He was afraid of him.

I've never been much of a crier, but I cried when I heard the news about Michael's death. I'll remember Michael as one of the funniest people I've ever met and as someone who looked for the good in everyone. What a great quality to have. He was never one to put anyone down. He always made you feel like a million dollars.

I really believe he was the greatest entertainer of all time. I am glad that together we formed a company and I produced the highest rated television music special of all time at Madison Square Garden in New York in 2001, Michael Jackson – 30th Anniversary Celebration. This was our crowning achievement as best friends. They were the two highest-grossing concerts, "non-charity", of all time.

His death has brought people together to remember what great music he gave us, what great dancing he gave us and how versatile he was as an artist. He was able to change with every decade and still be contemporary. He could sing anything, but the song I always made him sing in the car was "Man In The Mirror". For me, that was his greatest. Not only could I deeply relate to that song, but also for Michael it was more than a reflection.

It probably takes you so many time to list them
I think Give In To Me is the only one I don't like that much from Dangerous. And everyone seems to love it
But still, except for that one, you both have great, great playlists !

ITA for Scream Sweet Rus, I have just listened to it and you feel so less angry right after it. Same for Shout ( for me, at least ).
And melfreya, you're totally right about Will you be There. Especially since the memorial, i was so sad when i heard Michael's voice.

I'll probably do mine soon. If I can decide myself to not copy and paste the tracklists from each album !

The last dinner with Michael Jackson
EXCLUSIVE: RUSHKA BERGMAN

Famous New York stylist who was born in Takov (?), the woman who enchanted Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman and Hilary Clinton, for two and a half years she was inseparable with the tragic King of Pop, who said a month before he left this world’s stage that he will forever be with her.

Written by: Zaneta Apostolovski

Michael Jackson was never selfish, he shared his love with the whole world, but that he’s the King of Pop – no one truly admitted that till he died. Michael wasn’t a *****, even though so many ugly things and lies were written about him. People simply didn’t understand him just like they didn’t understand Beethoven and Mozart but time has proven that they were musical geniuses as well. Jackson was an amazing artist. He lived in his own world with his music. I’m happy/lucky because I got to be his friend and that he chose me out of all people to be his stylist – says Rushka Bergman, the personal stylist of the late pop icon.

She’s only worked for a few years in New York but she’s already worked with Hilary Clinton, Bjork, Cindy Crawford (?), Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow and many other stars. She’s convinced that Michael Jackson was the most noble and sophisticated person that she worked with.

“I work for the Italian ‘L’Uomo Vogue’, I styled lots of directors, athletes, actors and when we had to pick out a music icon for our photoshoot, I suggested Michael Jackson, so I sent him a letter. I was at the theatre when after three weeks I got a phonecall from his lawyer who said he was calling on behalf of Michael Jackson.” – I was completely caught off guard. I got scared that I did something wrong in the way I contacted him. so I started apologizing. When the lawyer told me that Michael agreed to do the photoshoot, I asked him to repeat that sentence again before I pass out I called the editor of the magazine right away and told her that Michael Jackson agreed to do the photoshoot.”

According to Ruska, the preparations for this photoshoot were the most intense preparations on the planet.

“I got thousands of girls assisting us but by the end of it we decided on six. Completely impressed with what he saw, Michael simply shouted, “Girls, you are divine!” – but in order for Rushka to hear that sentence she worked very hard for five months.

Even though he was a megastar, Michael never acted like one on the set. He was very professional, he knew that he was working with the best stylists, make-up artists and photographers and he never saw their work as something beneath him.

There were hundreds of people on set. We played his Thriller album, he immediately stood in front of the camera and started dancing and a few moments later everyone was in tears. He had so much energy that I then, and many times later, thought that he must be from a different planet

Michael Jackson thought the same about Rushka though. He was amazed how much love she put into her work . Because of similar sensibilities, they continued to work together and their professional association quickly turned into friendship. He loved her character and honesty. He appreciated the fact that she was always honest about what she could and couldn’t do as far as her work goes.

The change in Jackson’s style over the last couple of years was very noticeable and noticed by the world media, on the internet blogs, everyone was asking who was behind the new look of this 20th century pop icon. His secret weapon was of course RUSHKA BERGMAN!

“He trusted my taste a lot and he used to always tell me to never stop because I’m the most interesting person he’s ever met! When we became friends, he told me when I first showed up on his door in Vegas he could smell the Mediterranean sea on me”

Ruska and Michael were working intensely with one another over the last two years. They saw eachother often and stayed in touch regularly.

“My phone rang on New Years. I picked up the phone and heard someone singing opera. I was completely baffled. I asked who it was and Michael responded, “Who do you think it is?” – He was very shy and I can’t even describe how gentle he was. But his talent, voice, music and charisma can’t be surpassed.”

Since the first time they met, Rushka was convinced he was a genius. After that meeting in Vegas, her whole world changed. She walked down the street and suddenly compared to Michael, all the people seemed so ordinary.

“The more I watched him the more I loved him. He was simply magic. He was the most noble person in the world. No man on Earth can compare to his inner and outer beauty. I met so many stars, talked to them, worked with them, but no one was even close to Michael’s charisma. He was simply always ahead of everyone else and I can’t believe that my dear friend died How can I believe it when we actively worked so much together lately? I was getting the styling ideas ready for the tour, which unfortunately he will never get to do now – and it would’ve been a true spectacle.

According to Forbes magazine, Jackson would’ve earned 2.5 billion dollars from that tour. But he wasn’t too concerned about that. He had over 30 people who took care of everything and he had eleven lawyers, he lived in complete isolation but he was able to see who his true friends are. The moment Rushka came to LA, Michael would call her and sometimes he himself would pick her up at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

“The window of the limo would go down and Michael – guarded by six bodyguards in there – would wave at me and call me over. We loved and respected eachother. He loved everything that I wore, and he always wanted to wear it. He always asked me where I was hiding so long. A man like that will never come by again, but I’m convinced that his music will live for hundreds of years. Everyone copies him, but only when Michael himself showed up would people actually faint.”

The woman who works in the biggest fashion house and gives advice to Tom Ford, Givenchy and many others, she fascinated the King of Pop when it came to how humble she was and her general view when it came to money.

"When we had dinner just a month ago, Michael asked me, “Do you know why I love working with you? You never asked me for money. And we never talked about some agreements. You trusted me as I trusted you. I changed six managers in two years. You’re the only person who stuck with me. Everyone else came and went, and you, my dear, will be with me forever.”

The last time she saw him was two weeks before his death. She was at his house five days in a row.

“He was truly beautiful. He didn’t seem depressed or sad at all. He even danced a bit. Didn’t seem to have a care in the world. As always, he was the gentlest person on the planet. It seemed almost as if he was ‘ours’ (“Ours” is a Yugoslavian expression when talking about people who are actually from ex-Yugoslavia. Like “that girl looks like she’s ‘ours’” ). I never felt that about anyone aside from ~Steven Spielberg. But Michael was so unusual, his warmth and love completely got me. Everything was just fine. I can’t believe that he’s gone all of a sudden.”

She heard the news about his death while she was in the studio. The moment she heard it she thought she would fall off the chair. The only thing she could possibly say was that it was simply impossible, it can’t be. She couldn’t stop crying for days. All the material and the photographs and data that she has, she’s keeping for the movie, This is It, that’s coming out.

“I know I was very privileged because I had the chance to be so close to him, to see him as a real person. We perfectly understood eachother. I feel sad that the media was so unfair and cruel to him. He didn’t have cancer, his nose wasn’t falling off, all those things are just fabrications, stupidities and lies. The pop icon is among angels right now, but his music will live forever.”

I think Rushka loves him, haha.
Here's the article from l'Uomo Vogue. :

Michael Jackson
by Bruce Weber
by Roberto Croci

«I love you», whispered the King to his future Queen, ending the long day events with such beautiful wisdom. Only then, the villagers started celebrating, dancing and shouting hundreds of cheers everywhere in the kingdom of Vogueland. The mighty King had finally found his companion: a beautiful, courageous and magical princess, who, after a long journey saw, all her dreams come true. Even the wizard was respectful and all thumbs up for the king's choice, so much than with few words, he had sealed her fate: "A star is born". Let me introduce myself, ladies and gentlemen, I am the storyteller, and my assignment is to show you step by step L'Uomo Vogue's magical quest in photographing Michael Jackson (The King of Pop), thanks to Bruce Weber (the wizard) and fashion editor Rushka Bergman (the princess), all of it for the 25th Anniversary of the release of "Thriller", the most successful and most sold album in the entire world. September 14th 2007. From L.A. to New York, here I am. The doorman opens the door and Rushka Bergman - long satin jet-black hair, with 60's old vintage glasses - walks out welcoming me with a strong east European accent: «How are you darling?». I want to know all that happened before my arrival to the Four Seasons Hotel, few minutes away from Michael Jackson. On august 22nd, Rushka talks to her agent, Marek, suggesting him the photo shoot with Michael Jackson, in lime for the 25th anniversary release of "Thriller". She prepares a letter for Jackson's agent, Raymone K. Bain. We will see what happens next.
September 2nd. Broadway, right in front of the Angelika Theater. The phone rings. It's Raymone confirming the photo shoot. «Oh my god! Dreams do come true. Michael Jackson will be available on the 14,15,16 of September. September 5th. Fortunately for us, Weber, booked solid for the next 6 months, is available for those three days. «I was nervous. He is like a god to me, then I thought, who better than him knows fashion photography. It was enough to calm me down». It's up to the fashion editor to line up the photographer, hair&make up, talent & plan the shoot. Sometimes it is more important than the styling itself. «For someone like me, who knows Engels and Marx by heart, this is the easy part. Michael loves the Uomo Vogue look, elegant, classy, white shirts, black jackets. His favorite is Roberto Cavalli, they are great friends... but I like to mix & match and it is my job to speak my mind», says Rushka. September 6th-13th. Everybody is confirmed. «I was on the phone the whole week. I got 300 looks from 62 designers, 178 pairs of shoes. Michael loves a military coat, Burberry's. l've got clothes from every designer in the world, Paris, London, New York, Milan. No one said no to us. I even got some incredible sequins shirts that weigh 8 pounds! The King of Pop had the best clothes in the planet!». September 14th, the Four Season Hotel. The day before the shoot, Rushka is nervous but focused. We are riding a cab. With us, 20 racks of clothes. We got everything, except fur, Michael doesn't like them. We walk through the hotel, everybody stands still. We even passed the jeweler security checks, $ 2 million worth of diamonds! «I see Michael for the very first lime. He's sexy. My heart is beating. After I finished, he says to me: Rushka I like everything you chose, please, help me getting dressed». Michael wears a small size, like a model. Dior is the perfect fit for him. All the others required minimum fitting. «Now it's my turn. l've got to satisfy Michael Jackson, the magazine, Weber, the designers, all without compromising my style, my choices», says Rushka. Once back in her apartment she will focus on the looks for the shoot. But once in bed... it was hard to sleep «all night, I kept waking up. Millions of thoughts in my head. At 8 a.m. I got tip and went to the set». September 15th, 10 am, on the set. While Kabuki applies the make up and Bruce prepares everything else, Rushka starts dividing the clothes: jackets, pants, accessories, shoes.
