What are the other options and why are they more desirable to becoming the next Heidi Klum?
PS2:
I am not saying that Miranda should quit modeling at all, but at this stage it is more about being a brand, and walking fifty shows a season and being in a Vogue editorial every month is not going to increase her brand any more than covering best selling issues of magazines, being the face of successful campaigns, being someone that the public has a positive impression of, being Mrs. Orlando Bloom and having her picture taken holding a puppy, so Miranda should just do her thing whichever way she sees fit.
this entire post was so thoughtful and filled with truth. thanks, agee! i tried to give you karma but i guess i gotta spread it around.
i understand how people within the fashion industry have a sense of snobbery in regards to Heidi Klum. it's because she's a pop-star v.s. an indie-darling. it's the same reason why people love an artist like Feist or Neko Case over Britney or Christina. and most of the time, particularly recently, the indie artists do produce music that's more creative, more driven-by-genuine-inspiration, etc. (same goes for the models and their collaborations with genuinely experimental, challenging photographers, etc). however, a Britney sells out stadiums. and gets her name in history books.
from the late 80s to mid-90s, the entertainment industry didn't really have any sense of INDIE. not in models, or music, or film, etc. it didn't matter. whatever was awesome enough to become international is what was considered "successful" and "cool" and "iconic". that's why the supermodels of the time are still icons to this day (Cindy, Linda, Claudia, Naomi, etc) and same with the most popular musicians (Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, Whitney, etc)
then times changed and the internet expanded our access to and understanding of different artists, different scenes. and the mass-market commercial models were no longer "cool". Laetitia Casta and Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks and Rebecca Romijn weren't working for PRADA or GUCCI, etc. but they were NAMES. and they were making millions. and the models who were doing those high fashion campaigns, though they were very popular in their time, have mostly disappeared in relevancy once their era had passed.
people are too quick to pass judgement on the popstars. 20, 30 years from now -- people will remember Heidi Klum. whether we like it or not, she is undeniably a supermodel. she is FAMOUS and she is RICH (filthy rich). and she has become a tremendously successful BRAND that has launched beauty products, books, television shows, covered a ton of mass-market magazines, including GQ magazine more than ANY other female (find out the circulation of GQ. i'm quite certain it's a helluva lot more than VOGUE Italia), guest starred in films, etc etc. she has become a recognizable face/name/body in popular culture.
on a human level, i'm sure Heidi Klum feels quite content with her career. sure, she must have had a desire to be on VOGUE .. but at the end of the day, she has a successful marriage, happy and healthy children, millions of dollars in the bank, and the respect/adoration of a mass population. if Miranda has anywhere near the career of Heidi Klum, she will rank among the most successful models in history.
