MIRANDA Kerr is shrewd with her money because she knows her modelling days are numbered.
Miranda Kerr has just bought a $1 million New York apartment and is looking to invest in property back home.
Best known as the face of Portmans, the 23-year-old from Gunnedah is about to sign the most lucrative contract of her modelling career, becoming the face - and body - of lingerie giant Victoria's Secret.
But she says the contract won't affect her sensibilities. "I'm smart about my work and save my money because I know modelling is a short career and won't be there forever.''
In the US, Kerr - who has spent the past week in Sydney, where she signed on for swimsuit maker Seafolly - will work alongside supermodel Giselle Bundchen for Victoria's Secret.
She is the only Australian to have modelled in the company's runway show. "Being in the Victoria's Secret parade was the pinnacle of my career so far,''Kerr says.
"I've just done a big worldwide TV commercial and advertising campaign for them, and I work for them at least three times a week.''
Kerr was 12 when she won a model-search competition in Sydney. She moved to New York three years ago and soon appeared in the leading fashion magazines.
Known for her work with Maybelline cosmetics, Kerr also models regularly for Bloomingdales stores. She has starred in parades for Roberto Cavalli, Issey Miyake, Blu Marine and Comme des Garcons.
Kerr's versatility means she models swimwear, haute couture and lingerie. "I get a lot of work because I have a good attitude and keep my feet on the ground,'' she says.
"I'm a team player, and I make sure I give all my energy to the camera. What I love most though is doing TV commercials because they let me show more of my personality and creativity.''
Kerr has been asked to star in a new movie but is in no rush to start an acting career. "I have a lot of things going on but I've studied nutrition and psychology and am actually keen to work in health and nutrition in some way,'' she said.
"I know I'm naturally thin but I really take care of myself and am so careful about giving my body all the nutrients it needs. I literally step off a plane after flying for 20 hours, have a shower and go straight to work most of the time. I couldn't do that if I didn't look after myself.''
