Molten Metal S/S 08

gorgeous all the different varieties... :crush:

What fabrics are the designers mostly using to get this molten metal-look?

I think it's some kind of development of the "jean d'arc-trend" (for some it's probably just a plain coincidence) but with a much softer look, much more summery.

It's a really beautiful trend. Thank you for the notification!
a lot of different kind of fabrics can create this look

i've seen synthetic mixes of polyamide and viscose at Marni

and a few of the proenza schouler garments are actually feathers
others silk

Great thread, Spike!!!! I :heart: the mercury rising looks, some satin looks I don't see the accurate impact of "molten metal", varied interpretations I guess

Good eye and explanation, Spike! :flower:

I have been less apprehensive toward metallics this season as they weren't being done as tacky as in the past. I think you pinpointed exactly why... they're less robotic, less rigid and more feminine and fluid.

I'm digging this, as I love metal. I'm not sure a guy can pull it off though, without being over dramatic. That second look up there from Ashley Isham reminds me of the huge metal shavings we got when I was a machinist:

No, that's razor sharp shards of metal cut from a huge log of steel. LOL Sometimes they'd fly off and they'd dig into your skin, red hot. Fun times!

Pretty much all the material getting cut off this is the same, except it's aluminum. It heats up when cut, then cools, and so it curls into these spiral things.

Great thread, Spike!

This trend has been a favorite of mine for many seasons. Reminds me of a Bruno Pieters' show ions ago. Also reminds me of an amazing Ann D. trenchcoat a few seasons back. With that being said, I find the fluid fabrics add a bit of modernity and ease to this trend, whereas the structured pieces are much too stiff, visually speaking. It may be a different story IRL.

fourboltmain, that picture is fantastic. I love the texture of it.....wouldn't go near it, but wonderful to look at.

great thread spike

nina ricci is probably my favourite . .

the silver w purple at vera wang is also interesting
not something i'd expect to like but i do . .

and preen is nice too . . much more subtle than the rest

^ The last skirt posted is gorgeous... I am a bit tired of in your face metal tones so this really works for me since it's much more understated and delicate.

Really great trend spotting!

I got a really nice See by Chloe dress that would suit this trendperfect but it doesn't fit. Boo.

I noticed this liquid metal trend early in the game, too!

Here is some from Threeasfour:

Like many of the spring collections, there's also a lot of draping & layering (even "crisscrossing", if you will) of sheer fabrics on top half of the silouhette, which then fan out into an asymmetrical, diaphanous cascade on the legs. I think the prettiest looks in this set are the ones that combine subtle combinations of soft metallics and the delicate silks. Very ethereal, yet modern.
