There's a small pic and article/interview on Mona here. Can anyone translate?
Supermodel trades the runway for the paddock
INITERVIEW. From
Småländska Aneby to New York. Via London, Milan and Paris. When Metro talks to Swedish supermodel Mona Johannesson she is back in Småland again. For her model earnings, she has bought herself a horse ranch (I guess they mean a large house + stables, not an actual farm, haha). Was it not for the fact that she is 18 years old, you could have said that it has come full circle - it was thanks to her love of horses that she was discovered by a model scout at age 14, visiting Gothenburg Horse Show.
Had you ever considered modeling before that?
- No, not really. It's not like anyone is going around looking for models in Jönköping or Huskvarna, and there's no one who models either. I wasn't interested in fashion at all. I just wanted to be a professional equestrian.
Is that still want you want to do?
- Yes, or working with horses, at least. It could just as well be in something like breeding. She says in Småländska (characteristic dialect). The way she sounds does not match her appearance. When her breakthrough as a model came, she was quickly nicknamed "Baby Kate", and fashion journalists still like to talk of her as "the new Kate Moss".
- That's fun, of course, but you want to be known for who
you are. I can't see the resemblance between her and myself. But then I didn't know her when she was that young.
Have you ever met her?
- No, but I've done shows with Naomi Campbell and Gemma Ward.
Is Naomi the b*tch you would expect her to be?
- She was, actually, haha. Normally you have to be there 3 hours ahead of the show, but she arrived 30 minutes before it started, and then she didn't speak to anyone.
Do you ever get tired of the obsession with physical appearance in your profession?
Sure, you get sick of it sometimes. But I have stopped worrying about it, people will have to like me the way I am. But they complain about me being too short. Some girls get to hear that they need to lose weight, but that never happened to me.
Do you have to work harder because you are short?
Yes, but I wouldn't like to be any taller. They'll have to accept that I'm short. It's difficult at the shows, because everyone has bigger feet than I. If I'm lucky I can get size 39 shoes - I wear 37. They put tape in them, but that's not very good when you drop a shoe and the sock is still stuck in it...
Did you ever fall on the runway?
Yes, two seasons ago in Paris. I was wearing high-heeled flipflops with a chain twisted really hard around my ankle. I didn't get any blood to my foot, so my legs just buckled under me.
Were you the prettiest girl in school?
No, I don't think so. I always had friends and no problems or anything, but I've always been stick thin and that wasn't considered particularly attractive.
For how long will the myth about the stupid model linger on?
I don't know, but it's still alive today. People who don't know me, who just see me on the street, can draw the conclusion that I'm stupid. But I've never met any daft models.
