Slovakian stunner Monika Resetkova was introduced to the world of modeling when her friends and family encouraged her to participate in a national model search. Little did the blue-eyed beauty know that she would eventually become one of the top finalist in that competition's worldwide edition.
Resetkova subsequently signed with top agencies in the modeling world's most important cities, and landed on the covers of fashion magazines such as Elle and Grazia, among a few others. The 5-foot-9.5-inch charmer is sure to achieve greater things in the near future, so keep your eyes out for her.
Did you always wanted to be a model, or did you stumble upon it, get discovered etc.? Who or what inspired you to become a model? How did you get started in the modeling business?
Actually, I never thought about becoming a model. As a young girl I was very shy and all in my head turned around the school. Then my classmates and my dad started to push me to go to a model casting in Slovakia.
I didn’t know what modeling was about and when I arrived at the casting they very so enthusiastic about me and told me that I’m going to be their superstar. Guess what happened? I won the contest In Slovakia and they sent me to the “Super Model of the World” contest in New York City, where I was one of the winners and won a contract about 75,000 dollars as a 15 year old. This is the story of how I was discovered and started my career in the modeling business
What is your favorite or most exciting aspect about being a model? What do you like least?
The most exciting aspect for me beinga model is that you are traveling all over the world. What I like at least is that you occasionally lose your soul on the journey and that you sometimes forget where your home is.
What I try to say is that it is wonderful that your modeling job gives you the possibility to meet new people and to got to amazing places, but that it also can be difficult sometimes. For example you start to feel lonely because you are traveling alone all the time and almost you sleep in a different country at various hotels and beds every night. Sometimes it also get hard to leave your family for a while because when you need them you start to mess them and you are not possible to be with them all the time.
Have you encountered any surprises along the way?
Yes, that I got a second family, a fashion family. It is like a gift. I appreciate the little things a lot in my life, because without real friends you can’t survive this hell of the ride.
What has been your most awkward moment (of your modeling career)?
I'm the master of awkward moments, so i kinda lost track.
What's the funniest thing that happened to you on a photo shoot or fashion show?
Ugh, now u got me. ;-) It is hard to tell which one was the funniest but when you have a shoot the whole team makes a lot of jokes. It’s always very funny, we start to play with the hair, makeup and style and with each hour it is getting funnier and funnier. We laugh a lot all the time and sometimes everybody got so crazy that in the end it looks like a Halloween mask party
At the end of the shoot everybody got more energy and we all start to wake up when seeing the results of a great job we did, so we celebrate it sometimes with a glass of wine or champagne.
How would you describe yourself as model in three words?
Muse, professional and natural.
Out of all the places your career has taken you, where was the most memorable?
My heart is in Europe – so I like all the places in Europe – and when I say all I really mean all of them particularly big cities like Milano, Paris, London, Madrid, Barcelona and so on. Especially I love every place throughout the south of Italy, Spain and France … J’adore the sun and beach there but also the mountains and forest as well.
Some unforgettable moments I also had when I shoot in New York, Cuba, Tanzania, Egypt, Morocco, Tenerife, Lanzarote and also in Sweden, Thailand and Japan.
Who is your favorite photographer? Why?
Annie Liebovitz, as she sees what you can’t see normally. She captures the moment and her ideas for shoots are marvelous. Because of that she is one of my favorite photographers who inspire me a lot.
But there are even more photographers I like and with which I already worked and others with which I love to shoot one day.
What was the hardest photo shoot for you, and why?
Every single photo shoot can look as the hardest at the beginning but when you get into it, which I always try do with my self confidence, I go for it and try to make the best of it!! With my passion, love and profession!!! The shoot also becomes easier when you listen and try to realize the instructions of your clients, photographer and stylist.
Is there a difference in posing when you are doing a cover and an editorial?
I constantly try to give my best and so I shoot like I’m doing a cover each time even if it is just for an editorial but it always can be a cover try. You never know. Not and then it could be a nice surprise when you suddenly see yourself on a cover
But to get a good result it needs a good team work. So when you see a cover. You don’t see t just the model, who is the heart of the cover, you will see even more behind it. The heart of the cover needs to be beat with its veins and the veins are the photographer, stylist, makeup artist, hair stylist, assistants, retoucher and chief editor.
Is there an artistic or general difference in doing editorials/covers in Europe opposed to USA?
Yes, every country has a different mentality and so do the people.
Is there an artistic or general difference in doing editorials/covers in Europe opposed to USA?
Oh yes, there is a difference. Personally I think that the editorials and covers in the USA are more commercial than in Europe and this is the reason why the US covers of high fashion magazines feature more actors and singers than models. My opinion is that actors should play movies and fashion models should cover fashion magazines. ;-) For that reason I prefer more magazines like Vogue Italy, Vogue Paris, Numero and i-D. I like their Editorials and Covers more because they are more artistic and fashionable full of great models.
Did anyone in the industry ask you to change your look, name, etc...? If so, what did you do?
Of course people try to change me. Everybody has a different tastes and the fashion industry is full of various styles, images etc. And fashion is changing all the time. What is IN the next day will be OUT, because of that you should be careful with extreme changes at your look. It’s better to stay natural, classic or unique. During a shoot they can change your look however the like it and you can have a lot of different and cool images for a few hours, but at the end of a shoot, I’m back to who I’m in real life. All this is another planet which I like because I’m a dreamy girl who likes to live sometimes in her own world of fantasy
Have you had any negative experiences with model agencies, talent scouts? What are top 3 warning signs to look out for?
I haven’t, but of course I can give a few warm up for aspiring models.
1. If someone wants to take your passport, you should always have it with you.
2. Make sure you check out the places or agencies where you have to go and which are far away from your home.
3. Don’t do anything you don’t like to do equal if they try to push you or not.
4. Don’t believe anyone else beside yourself.
Would you share some of your future goals, your life motto, any words of wisdom that get you by in life and professional career?
I have a lot of them I would like to share, one of my favorite ones are:
Always try your best.
Be there for people who you want to be there for you.
Don’t forget who you are and where you came from.
Try to stay positive then you will see everything easier.
When a door closes there are other ones to become open.
A life motto for me is :
Life is not a race,
but a journey to be savored
each step of the way.
Yesterday is history,
tomorrow is a mystery
and today is a gift.
What should a relationship between an agent and model look like?
Friendly and always professional.
Who is your favorite all-time model?
Except my mum and my grandmother, it is Kate Moss, maybe Carla Bruni and definitely Natalia Vodianova and Gemma Ward.
Who are your favorite fashion designers?
Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Christian Louboutin, Julien Mcdonald, Stella Mccartney and many more.
Best Jean?
Zara
but I also can recommend Diesel or Acne
What things in your wardrobe would you never throw away?
I would never throw things away which have an unforgettable memory to me from the past, things that someone gave to me as a gift, pictures of my personal life and I also wouldn’t throw away my expensive bags, sunglasses, watches, scars’, rings because after some years they will be a wonderful vintage piece that I can pass than to the next generation. ;-)
What era would you like to bring back?
The 70's.
Who is your style icon?
Actually it is very witty but I always had men as my style icons always not women. My style was always just a little bit inspired by Guns & Rosses, Jon Bon Jovi, Brad Pitt, Jonny Depp and Patrick Swayze. But anyhow I of course always manage to look like a sexy lady not a man
hehehe
Furthermore my style is always very different because it depends on where I used to be at the moment and how I feel. Sometimes I used to be dressed very elegant and Parisian or Italian with high heels and a hot skirt or dress. Moreover I also like to feel comfortable sometimes just wearing simple snickers or boots together with jeans, a lose shirt and my rock star jacket which always looks cool on me ;-)
