Monsieur Lacenaire designer Garance Broca had jazz on her mind for spring. “I was inspired by jazz covers from the Fifties and Sixties, the period of Blue Note Records,” she explained. That’s when Reid Miles was the label’s graphic designer. “The work of graphic designers at the time was more artisanal… and to me, it reflected the way I work with knitwear,” she continued. “I really love the irregularity, the imperfection in his work. It has a lot of spirit, and I used it to make the design in the knitwear for this collection.”
Sometimes the jazz references were blatant — such as a silhouette of Dizzy Gillespie’s bent horn — while at others, they were less so — like in a look with three rows of various shades of turquoise squares. The upbeat, wearable collection was presented in Paris’ oldest recording studio at the same time that a vinyl record, called Jazzocratie, was being cut.
