Model Moment: Montana Cox Chats To Josh Flinn
Phew! It's all over- MBFWA just wrapped with a stellar show welcoming the new mag Elle to Aussie shores. A celebration of everything Australian on the catwalk and a taste of the brilliant local talent we have in our Lucky Country. I took a model moment with my friend and ( I have to admit it- my baby!) Australia's Next Top Model Season 7 winner Montana Cox to chat about how she deals with the week and what's in store for her.

Josh Flinn: It's all over! Montana you have had a crazy week- how many shows were you booked for?
Montana Cox: Hahaha! I know Flinny, I actually had to think- is it 10? No! Final count was 12. I had an exclusive with David Jones stockists so it was nice to know where I was going and what I was doing. They are so organised! I have been very well looked after this season so it has been really nice. But still busy!
Josh Flinn: That's great Monty but were there any standouts? Any shows you really enjoyed being involved in?
Montana Cox: God, quite a few. I really enjoy working with Romance Was Born, those two are so incredibly talented and it's almost like theatre. They are crazy and wacky and so much fun to work with. There is always such a big wait to see what they have in store for their shows. Sometimes when you model you feel like you just have to robotically walk down the runway and you are not part of the environment so with Anna and Luke you really feel part of their drama. Each outfit, from the set to the hair and make up is styled around you so it is special. I look back and I can't believe I am a part of it, it's really amazing and their shows have such a great vibe...
Josh Flinn: As a very busy and in demand model, what do you find to be the hardest part of your job?
Montana Cox: Oh, honestly the waiting! I know, shows take months to organise and the people that do them are ace but when your call time is sometimes 4-5 hours before the show it can be really boring. Waiting is the hardest part for me – just sitting around and not having much to do. God that sounds like I am such a whinger and I don't mean it that way, but when you are a model you get pushed from show to show in such a rush but then there is so much down time you have to learn how to amuse yourself! Oh and lack of sleep – when I have a day off I sleep – boring I know but sleep is my come down!
Josh Flinn: And so important! No bags under the eyes babe – not cool. We all know this industry can sometimes seem so impossibly glam but what do you think is the biggest misconception about the industry?
Montana Cox: Yeah, just that. It isn't as glamorous as people think – it's work you know? I mean yeah it is incredible to work with fantastic designers and photographers. I mean when I first started I had no idea what I was doing and now I have worked with some of the best people in this entire business. I can't get over it – the amount of talent and creativity is pretty overwhelming but you learn every day. I guess girls say that all the time but I can't really get over how much I have learnt. But still – fittings, castings and re-calls are not all that fun. Plus the whole time you are kind of thinking that you might be judged on how you look all the time and you just have to get over it and put it out f your mind – that kind of talk isn't going to help you so I try really hard to just turn up and get on with it.
Josh Flinn: You didn't do the European shows this year? (Montana has walked for Chanel, Dior and Lanvin to name a few) Why not?
Montana Cox: You know to be honest I didn't feel ready Josh. These shows are full on and the weeks themselves are pretty intense – I just felt that I wasn't in the right mindset for them they are soooo full on. It is a big month and you have to really mentally and physically prepare and I didn't want to go in half hearted. If I do something I want to do it right. I also needed a break, and it felt right to take a step back and just relax and chill for a bit.
Josh Flinn: Only 2 years ago you were the winner of a reality show and now you have walked for some of the best designers on the planet- what's next for Monty? I mean, in the near future?
Montana Cox: Yeah it has been pretty weird, strange and full on and awesome all at the same time! I am heading to LA next week I think? I am going there as my agent was LA or Japan? I would love to go to Japan but LA is great. I will be there for a couple of weeks and I am looking forward to it. Then off to New York, to work and castings etc...then Europe for resort season and this time I am ready! Couture in June/July and then home again in August- I cannot wait to see my family and friends at home and just be around them for a while.
Josh Flinn: So....not much then! It is quite hard to believe that 2 years ago you were this daggy and not in a bad way! Sweet and fresh faced teenager and now you and I are sitting here talking about your international schedule. It isn't only incredible it's wonderful that you are doing so well. But as we all know it doesn't last forever- what do you or where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Montana Cox: Geez- I dunno mate! I really want to get into presenting, it opens so many doors and I kind of want to try a little bit of everything if I can. I am quite used to being given criticism, as you know, so I can take it! Seriously though another part of me would like to live in New York – that city has so much energy and a fabulous vibe. I could buy a little loft apartment, get a dog and a guy to settle down with – who knows! I just want to do something that I love and modeling is it and live my dream...
