I thought I'd start a thread since movie award season is upon us. I believe the SAGs are announced today and the Golden Globe's tomorrow (Thurs 12-13-12).

So far the only contender's I've seen are Silver Linings Playbook and Skyfall-- both were great.

I've ordered Beasts of the Southern Wild via Netflix. I've heard a lot of good things about it so I can't wait to see it.

SAG nominations: 'Lincoln' and 'Les Mis'; 'Modern Family' and 'Homeland' headline list

TV is predicable. Same old same old. Betty White can GTFO. Sorry but she shouldn't be there. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the Emmy and she isn't even nominated. Comedy Ensemble is a big WTF. Get rid of Glee, Nurse Jackie and The Office and put in Parks and Rec, Community, New Girl, even Happy Endings. It's BS.

FILM is mostly what I thought would be there. Even though I haven't had the chance to see The Master yet I can't believe Joaquin and Amy were snubbed. Everyone is saying their performances are flawless.

FYI lots of people are asking about Beasts of the Southern Wild. It wasn't eligible because it wasn't a union production.

Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty didn't submit screener's in time to be nominated for ensemble so people are asking how come Jessica got a nom. Very interesting.

SAGs have been moved up to 27th January. Usually they are about three weeks before the Oscars. The Globes are on the 13th when they are usually the last weekend of Jan. It's too early if you ask me.

I'm sorry but Nicole Kidman for Paperboy? Really? I hate how these shows suck up to A-listers just to have a "big" red carpet.

Glee is well past it's prime. I don't know why it gets nominated for anything.

I haven't seen Paperboy yet despite really really really wanting to but according to all the reviews she was pretty great and she was included at the SAGs as well meaning that she is incredibly likely to get an Oscar nomination. Considering how weak the Best Supporting Actress race is this year, the obligatory star nomination (if Nicole is that) could have been a lot worse.

The Best Actress race is so interesting and even though Jennifer looks ahead at the moment, it could all change next week and Jessica could become the front runner again.

I'm more surprised by Rachel Weisz's nom. Not gonna say something about her acting, just didn't see it coming. The Deep Blue Sea was released more than a year ago.

I'm not a big fan of Keira, but I'm surprised she wasn't nominated as well.

Critics ripped Paperboy apart. Is it common for someone to get an Oscar nod for a performance in a movie that not only flopped at the box office but was a critical failure?

Anna Karenina has not gotten the best reviews so I'm not surprised Keira isn't nominated.

If Jessica Chastain gets an Oscar nom for Zero Dark Thirty that will be two nominations in a row for her. Does anyone know if there have been other actors who got two in a row?

^ Off the top of my head Nicole Kidman was nominated for Moulin Rogue in 2002 and then The Hours in 2003. Renee Zellweger was nominated for Bridget Jones in 2002 and then Chicago in 2003. Tom Hanks was nominated and won back to back with Philadelphia (1994) and Forest Gump (1995). There are probably more.

^^ Bette Davis and Greer Garson were both nominated 5 years in a row for Best Actress. Marlon Brando was nominated 4 years in a row for Best Actor.

^I guess back-to-back noms isn't as rare as I thought.

I saw two more contenders.

Zero Dark Thirty was riveting. Jessica Chastain should definitely be in the hunt for Best Actress. I also think Jason Clarke's name should be in the mix for Supporting Actor.

Django Unchained was amazing. Christoph Waltz should get a nod for Best actor and Leo and Sam Jackson should be mentioned for Supporting Actor nods.

^ I totally agree with you. I just watched both films and they were fantastic.

Jason Clarke needs more attention. Like John Hawkes he is acting circles around more established actors.

I have a feeling that Django won't get any acting nods. Yes to Best Picture, Screenplay and maybe director. I could be wrong though.

I have Lincoln and The Impossible to watch next. I really can't be bothered though.

^I agree about Lincoln. I should want to see it but can't muster the enthusiasm.

I'm reluctant to see The Impossible after I read it is essentially about a White family dealing with the infamous Thai tsunami with Asians being relegated to the background. It might be a great movie but something about that rubs me the wrong way.

I should be getting Beasts of the Southern Wild from Netflix soon and can't wait to see it.

Late reply, but what?! Hell no! One of the best comedies (or dramedy) on TV today and probably my favourite comedy ensemble.

^ Sorry I just think the casts of Community and Parks deserve it more

I think this is the first year in over ten years now that I've not done a proper prediction ballot for the Oscars. Though I still follow the races, I'm not nearly as invested or involved as I used to be.

To answer a couple questions that were raised a few posts back, it is pretty rare for a film that was panned by critics to be nominated in any of the major categories. Sean Penn for I Am Sam is usually the example given for this, and there may have been one or two more in the last 15 years that I can't think of at the moment. Of course Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close made a Picture lineup (of 9) with generally poor reviews. With that said, I'm not so confident Nicole can make it with The Paperboy. Unlike the other two movies I mentioned, this is the type of movie that Academy usually likes to stay away from. But what works in her favor is that she doesn't have much of a competition: Maggie Smith (hasn't shown up anywhere aside from SAG), Judi Dench (Academy has never nominated an actor from a Bond film), Ann Dowd (only showed up at BFCA). I hope Nicole misses (because I don't like her, lol), but it's hard to tell.

As far as someone getting back-to-back nominations, that is pretty common. In fact, I think most years, there's at least one person who was nominated the year before. In the last 15 years we've had: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep (twice), Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Judi Dench (thrice), Michelle Williams, Robert Duvall, Jeremy Renner.

Tomorrow, I want to see Beasts of the Southern Wild in a few categories, namely, Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actress and Supporting Actor. It's really underperformed this whole season and there is no way it's getting in all of those categories, but I hope it can show up in at least a couple.

I'd also like to see Jason Clarke(!!!) and/or Jennifer Ehle to show up in Supporting categories for Zero Dark Thirty.

Would be extatic if Amour can score in lead acting categories (Actor and Actress), Picture, Director, Screenplay and Foreign.

Hope we won't be seeing Nicole Kidman (again, I know), Tommy Lee Jones, Leo DiCaprio or Denzel Washington anywhere on the nomination list, alas that's very unlikely.

I love Naomi Watts but I hope she isn't nominated (or at least doesn't win) for The Impossible. There were some impressive scenes but half the movie was just her screaming in pain combined with some very graphic images. She played a tortured person far better in Funny Games and has put in stronger performances in the past. Of course it's nice that she's finally being recognized the way she deserves but I hate that it's for this performance.

Not to mention the film itself being very problematic in how it chose to approach this theme/event. Though the cinematography was quite stunning.

^ I've read on a couple of movie blogs that if Naomi gets the Oscar it will be for her work more than this role. They didn't say she wasn't good in The Impossible but I understand what they mean.

Yes I hope Amour gets Oscar nods too. Glad to see it included in the BAFTA noms. Much deserved.

I agree with you. Nicole as much as I love her won't get an Oscar nom same goes for Denzel. I wouldn't be surprised if Leo is left out but Tommy Lee Jones will probably get one.

Re BATFA noms.

So disappointed they overlooked John Hawkes. I really can't believe it.

Very surprised about Helen Mirren for Hitchcock and Ben in Argo for Acting.

Very Happy that the 3 leads of The Master haven't been overlooked.

I kind of hope there are some surprises but not stupid upsets like last year at the Oscars.

Django Unchained, Perks of Being A Wallflower, Moonrise Kingdom, Skyfall, and Argo are the BEST movies I saw last year. I'm sure there are some great ones that I still need to see such as Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Flight, and Lincoln. But of the ones I did see last year, I'm rooting for the ones I listed. I'll give an honorable mention to The Dark Knight Rises. I think it was exceptional, but it unfortunately got overshadowed by that shooting tragedy. Also, I think the fact that it's a blockbuster will screw it over. The indies have ruled the past couple of seasons.

Oh and I'm SO disappointed that Jamie Foxx isn't getting any recognition for his performance in Django. Such bullsh*t!!
