That article wasn't fascinating to me. Just more proof that Hollywood actually does go by favoritism and meritocracy rather than who actually deserves to win/be nominated. This is why the Oscars have gotten so out of touch the last decade or so.

Who/what I think should win:
Picture: Beasts of the Southern Wild - easily the most heart wrenching and unconventional film of the bunch in my opinion
Director: Benh Zeitlin or Haneke - both gave something different to what we're used to seeing. if PTA was nominated for The Master I would have definitely gone for him.
Actress: Chastain - Even though Chastain's performance was subdued something about it just moved me. She brought a nice mixture of vulnerability and stubbornness.
Actor: Joaquin Phoenix - One of the best performances of the decade. The fact that he's not the undeniable front runner is insane to me. Cooper is number two for me in this category.
Supporting Actress: Amy Adams - perfect balance of doting wife and dominant force
Supporting Actor: Hoffman - all performances in The Master were just perfect. Hoffman nailed the charismatic and sketchy aspects of this character perfectly.
Original Screenplay: Zero Dark Thirty - I don't really care for any of the nominees in this category but ZD30 is definitely the best one of the bunch
Adapted Screenplay: Silver Linings Playbook - The star of the film was easily its screenplay in my opinion.
Animated Feature: Wreck-it Ralph - Haven't seen all the nominees though
Foreign: Amour - Haven't seen all the nominees but Amour tore my heart out
Cinematography: Skyfall - Life of Pi was stunning but most of it was CGI. The Master was ROBBED in this category.
Score: Life of Pi - Beasts of the Southern Wild should have been nominated and won here though.
Song: Skyfall - It's Adele.

I hope Anna K wins for Costume and Score. That score was incredible and he's becoming my new favourite film composer.

I just saw Silver Linings Playbook and it was a solid film all around. However, performance wise...I think Bradley Cooper was a tiny bit stronger than Jennifer.
At times, I thought the fact that Jennifer is clearly much younger than Bradley was a bit distracting.

My predictions at the moment are as follows:


Best Picture: Argo (Very much deserved!!)

Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis (I've only seen one movie in this category and it's not Lincoln, but the Academy loves him.
Although I'm kind of rooting for Bradley Cooper).

Best Actress: Riva (mainly because she won the Bafta. I don't think Jessica or Jennifer had winning performances, but they were both great.
And I haven't seen the other two films. It would be great to see a Wallis upset though).

Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (I honestly thought Jamie Foxx was better, but I really want Django to win SOMETHING).

Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway (Kind of obvious at this point)

Best Director: Benh Zeitlin (considering the whole cast was newcomers, that was very impressive directing).

Animated film: Paranorman or Frankenweenie (Someone besides Pixar deserves to win at least one year).

Cinematography: Skyfall (Very hard category, because there were so many beautifully shot films this year).

Costume Design: Anna Karenina (Jacqueline Durran)

Documentary Film: How to Survive a Plague

Film Editing: Argo (the editing was perfect. Every scene had a specific purpose).

Foreign Language Film: Amour

Makeup & Hair: Les Miserables

Original Score: Argo (Alexandre Desplat)

Visual Effects: Prometheus (I thought it definitely had the best effects of the lot. There wasn't a shot in the film in which you could actually notice the digital effects. I saw that in the other choices, especially The Hobbit).

Who I want to win -

Picture: If I'm honest Zero Dark Thirty. Argo as my runner up. I was on the edge of my seat with both. Djano was great but its not QTs best. Lincoln was a snoozefest. I would be delighted if Amour won. That would be a moment.

Director: To be honest I don't really care. The fact that Kathryn and Ben aren't nominated makes this category sort of mundane. If Haneke won that would be fab upset. I don't believe Steven should get it for Lincoln. If DOR wins I will scream bloody hell.

Actress: I would be so happy if Riva wins but Jessica deserves it just as much. I can't understand people saying "oh she's got more noms ahead of her." So what. She deserves this one more than The Help. I'm not jumping on the I hate Jennifer bandwagon either. I think she's awesome but she's third runner up for me.

Actor: Joaquin. 100% all the way. I wasn't even impressed with DDL. Part of me feels it's just because he's playing a president. Bradley Cooper and Hugh Jackman gave better fantastic performances than DLL. I still don't know why Denzel was nominated.

Supporting Actress: As much as I love Amy this role is not going to be her win. Anne 100% deserves this. Helen Hunt is runner up for me. Sally Field was crap and I love her.

Supporting Actor: PSH was truly a thousand times better than DeNiro and TLJ. It would be amazing if he got it. As my runner up I'm backing Waltz as he's won the others awards.

Original Screenplay: QT all the way. Zero Dark Thirty as my runner up. I would love though if Wes and Roman pulled an upset.

Adapted Screenplay: I don't want DOR winning anything. Argo may have lied about a few things but it was still solid.

Animated Feature: I would rather Brave or Norman get it but I watched Wreck-it Ralph on Friday night and it is a cute story so any of these 3.

Foreign: Amour.

Song: Skyfall. Adele fan here and I lovely her wacky speeches lol.

Costume: I think Mirror Mirror should get it. Best thing about the film. Anna's costumes were stunning as well. I worship Colleen Atwood but well she can't win every time.

I'm fairly happy with my performance of 9 out of 11. In hindsight, it was wishful thinking wanting the invisible war to win. As to best actress, it seems to me that chastain never recovered from ZDT's bad press and she was playing catch up the whole race. I think you could see her desperation when she even trotted out the secret boyfriend near the end to get some press. And I think riva's campaign started too late and was too little against the Hollywood system, so it never got enough momentum. It's a pity because I believe it was those two that really deserved it of the best actress nominees. I am genuinely perplexed that people think Lawrence's SLP performance was amazing. It was a sweet little film of course, but hardly a tour de force of acting on Lawrence's part. Someone else has mentioned this I believe as well, but I too think she looks far too young for her role as Bradley's opposite. To me, it was a piece of miscasting that was actually distracting. But props to Lawrence; she ran a superb, perfectly timed campaign. You can't really fault her on that.

I didn't post my predictions here, but on my office ballot I did terribly, lol. I've never gotten so much wrong, but at least it was an exciting race (best supporting actor specially seemed like it could go in any direction imo).

I liked "Searching for Sugar man" a lot, but I was a little surprised it won as well - I thought Gatekeepers would get it.

Looking back at my predictions above, I got 17 out of 21 right. Did pretty well in my tech categories, less so in the 'main' categories. I missed Director, S.Actor, O.Screenplay and Art Direction. Screenplay miss was my fault for failing to see the obvious. Director and S.Actor were very open categories so no shame there. And Art Direction was kind of a surprise given Lincoln's lack of support elsewhere.

I thought the ceremony was a bore. Save for an exciting moment here and there (AN ACTUAL TIE, Jennifer Lawrence's and Adele's wins, etc) it was the most bored I had ever been during the Oscars. Did not care for Seth as the host, even though I generally like him. All those musical number did nothing for me. Generally predictable wins. Lack of exciting fashion look (again, save fore Jen Lawrence).

I got 12 right!! I'm most excited about the following:

1. All of Django Unchained's wins! I really loved this movie, so it was great to see it get recognition, especially the Original Screenplay win for QT.

2. Everything Argo won!! So deserved!! I know a lot people think they were pity wins, but this film was legitimately BRILLIANT! It was such a great movie watching experience for me.

3. Amour for Best Foreign Film! So happy it got at least one award!


4. Searching for Sugarman for Documentary...I predicted "How to Survive a Plague" would win, because it seemed more like what the Academy voters would go for. However, I'm SO happy Searching for Sugarman won it!!

5. Anne Hathaway! It was obviously going to happen at some point in her career, so I'm so happy she got it for this role. Her performance was so real, raw, and just heartbreaking.

6. Skyfall!! I'm so happy it got at least two awards. They are so deserved. Big films tend to get limited recognition from the Academy, so it was nice they didn't completely snub it. The film was beautifully made. It should have gotten Best Cinematography.


The win that probably annoyed me the most was definitely Jennifer Lawrence.
She was wonderful in SLB, but I think she will undoubtedly be nominated again for better performances. The other nominees (in particular, Riva and Naomi Watts) had much stronger performances in my opinion.

I won the office poll. I only got 5 wrong. And I think I may have been the only female so woo girl power. I was kicking myself cause I had Ang Lee and Brave in their categories and swapped at the last minute before I sent it off. So stupid.

So happy for Argo, QT, Adele, Anne, Amour, Waltz, Brave and Jennifer. It was kind of cool how it was spread out and most films got one or two.

Seth was alright. Yes he said some really dumb*** things but it was to be expected. It's Seth.

Weirdest part for me was Michelle Obama. Sorry but I still don't understand why she made an appearance. I just don't get it.

I agree, it was so boring. I actualy like Seth but he was not the right host (and I was very exited for him). The opening number was bad, no actual jokes about the films and instead very random things. I know it was kind of sexist but I found the breast thing kind of funny - tje Jennifer part was hilarious, I wish there were more actresses doing it since they were pretty much all there. The Sally part was also fun mainly when he says that Anne is going to win.
Tina and Amy for next year (as they said).

It was kind of unexpected that Argo would win, but I'm still not very happy with it. For one, it got the story completely wrong. For another, it was a rather unremarkable film. Films like that just come out all the time and there wasn't even much suspense for me because everyone knows the ending. In all honesty, I can't see it as more than a very average propaganda piece.

I'm quite glad Life of Pi won for director. I was skeptical before I watched it but it was thought-provoking, visually beautiful, and something different from what we normally see. I think it's great for a director to be rewarded for successfully handling a challenge.

I know DDL winning was a given, but I was secretly kind of hoping Hugh Jackman (and even Denzel Washington) would win. The clip they showed before announcing best actor made me tear up a little. I think the acting categories this year were just so strong, and there are so many actors I would love to see win.
