La-passion-de-James-Franco-pour-Gucci_article_landscape_pm_v8.jpg

LA DOLCE VITA with Natalia Bonifacci
IMG_5069.jpg

Italian beauty Natalia Bonifacci invited us over to her sun-drenched L.A. pad to play dress up (and down) in our Spring ’13 Collection. Between shots, we chatted with our multi-hyphenate muse about her new home base, how she got into modeling, what inspires her impeccable style and the countless other amazing projects she has up her sleeve.

“I love living in Los Angeles, even though I’m on the road a lot. When I saw this place, I just sort of knew right away. It’s very luminous and white, and I love all of the little details. It has that Old Hollywood feeling yet is still modern. It is still a work in progress, but my friends tell me that it’s really welcoming and I like that. I feel at home here.”

“Growing up, I never thought of modeling. I wanted to be an actress or an architect, I read a ton of books, and I drew a lot, I had a little funny clothing line when I was in middle school. I was definitely surprised and flattered when I got scouted, and I sort of kept it for myself and didn’t tell any of my friends that I was modeling at first. Now, I love my job. It’s hard work, but it’s fun and I enjoy the creative process of it. I love meeting new people and the opportunities that come with it. It made me extremely independent.”

“Personal experiences tend to inspire me. I travel a lot and have to say goodbye often, so I like making postcards for friends. I draw them myself, something personal from the city – and they tend to have a made up quote connected to it. I usually draw on long flights, in hotel rooms and at cafés in cities where I don’t know anyone.”

“My mom used to tell me “Bisogna prendere la palla al balzo”. It’s a way of saying you gotta catch the ball when it “rebounds”, to catch the opportunity when it presents itself. I think it represents my way of being. I might get jittery or nervous about things, but I go for opportunities when they present themselves.”

“I am actually excited about a few trends this season because they really represent my personal style. It’s nice when trends adjust to you, rather than the other way around.”

“To me, fashion is a creative playground, an extension of myself. Through the pieces I choose to wear, I am making a statement of my personality. It’s a way to choose my own skin.”
IMG_5008.jpg

“Besides modeling, there are a few new things that I am excited about. I’ve been part of some fashion short films that will be coming out soon. They allowed me to play with acting a little bit, and I really got into that, so I am starting to take acting classes. I also launched an interview series for RedMilk called A Beautiful Tandem. It’s a window into creative duos that give life to artistic original projects in the world of fashion, music, art and so on. I do it in collaboration with photographer and director Nick Walker. I love interviewing and enjoy being behind the camera. I think having been in front of it for so long has given me insight into how to make people feel at ease in a situation that can be uncomfortable for some. I have to say it is a very powerful feeling to have a completely random idea and bring it to life.”

FIRST KISS
Natalia Bonifacci, Model/Writer/Actress [14-15]
Any fun moments come from being in the video?
None of my old lovers have reached out to me to comment about it, but I did get funny proposals from old buddies of mine being like, "Now I want to kiss you, too." Some messages made me blush. It's weirdly flattering. Weirdly flattering.
Have you been recognized by anyone due to the video?
There was this woman at a party. She was staring at me for quite a bit before finally coming up to me to introduce herself. She said I looked familiar and asked if we had met before. I'm usually coy about these things, but I told her, "Well, you know, there is this video going viral…" And she yelled to her boyfriend, "OMG! This is the girl from that kissing video we watched all morning!"
Have you seen or talked to anyone else that was in the video since?
As far as Karim, my kissing partner, I haven't seen him since the shoot. He did friend-request me on Facebook, though, and we chatted a few times since.
What was the experience like being filmed?
I have kissed men on set in the past, but always for acting purposes, which is also way different because you are protected by a different identity when you act. The day of the shoot I woke up wanting to cancel because I was incredibly nervous. Karim had forgotten about the shoot, so he ended up showing up over an hour late. I'm really punctual, so I had a good amount of time to get more nervous and shy and giggly. We introduced ourselves to one another on set in front of five rolling cameras. I kept laughing, and talking, and I was barely looking at him, and then I realized I had completely forgotten his name. It was nerve-racking. Eventually, I was the one who leaned in to kiss him. I did feel really good afterwards, though; I love feeling bold.
Why do you think people like the video so much?
In a world where people communicate via WhatsApp, where people screen their phone calls before calling you back, where people flirt through Facebook but then ignore one another face-to-face, where we all tend to protect ourselves from a deep human contact, I imagine that seeing vulnerability—true and pure vulnerability—can be very touching. Someone even said, "It made me believe in love again; it gave me hope."
What are you up to next?
I'm a full-time model, but when I'm not traveling, I'm the perfect, walking LA cliché: model/wannabe actress! Besides that, I write. I have two interview columns for a Milan-based online magazine called RedMilk. My Instagram is connected to Italian magazine Grazia.it, where they feature my day-to-day visual diary. I also write articles for them every once in a while.

Bright Lights Big City

We shot this in downtown LA, during the golden hour that soon turned to the darkest of hours. Natalia, our beautiful vivacious Italian model, brought each dress to life as she strummed the streets and talked with strangers that soon became friends. Her quirky personality and love for life mixed with her remarkably charming Italian accent, brought a reality to these dresses, a life that created a lust in everyone on this shoot to put one of these dresses on and stay out all night.
