WORLDWIDE JOB

Around the world in one Fashion week – that is the destiny for very few, but Natasha Povelvshikova is among those. For Russian Vogue she tells how does it feel to be the supermodel.

I’ll be honest, three Fashion weeks will drive anybody crazy. Think of it: endless work during 21 days, 40 shows, tens of sprint races to fittings, repetitions, extreme situations and three different cities. But I find some time to tell Russian Vogue about the rise-and-falls of my velvet (and sometimes not) season ss08. So… Let’s make it in order.

New York
Sept 7. I live in NY. It’s easy and nice to start the marathon at home. The first show – Proenza Shouler. I adore them. They’re so nice: they always have fun and enjoy their work, even when the show is about to begin and the girls are not ready yet. Katie Grand, Editor in Chief of Pop Magazine, styled the show, that is why everything looked so artistic – you can’t decide whether this was a runway show or a parade of colonial forces. I was wearing super short dress belted on my waist, and had this feathered cavalryman hat.
Sept 8. Phi is my favorite brand in NY. Her style is very close to what I love: unisex, lots of jersey, a tee looking out the sweater and a loose jacket on top – not really sexy, yet very comfortable.
After Phi I run to the Ralph Lauren show. It’s such a grand event for the Americans, and also it’s an anniversary – 40 years. The show in the Central Park reminded of buffoonery: tzar-ish costumes, chic hats by Phillip Treacy. Refined and irreproachable long dresses – it was all about the clothing for aristocrats and perfectionists.
Sept 9. It’s Sunday but no talk about holiday. Fashion world never sleeps and I don’t sleep with it. I met Maria Sharapova at the backstage of Michael Kors. She’s a legend of our times – she’s active and very feminine, sporty and elegant. She’s the essence of Kors’s style. Flawing silk dresses, light and free suits. I can clearly see myself wearing these clothes somewhere in St Tropez or St Bart.
Narciso Rodriguez also stayed true to himself. This time it was painting and dance that inspired him. The collection appeared to be very modern, graphic and extremely colorful.
Sept 10. Today’s very quiet day with only one show and one party to attend. But I still had to wake up very early. At 7 am I’m getting my make-up done for Carolina Herrera show. Thanks God it was all about natural look – a ponytail and some fresh accents using light rouge. I was wearing the black top and shorts. They also gave me very funny butterfly sunglasses. I fell in love with it. No fashionista will do without them.
I’m getting ready for the American Vogue’s party at night. Gucci sent me brown cocktail dress for the event. It suits me very well, even though I don’t have lots of brown in my closet. I’m going with Eugenia Volodina, my good friend. I hate partying alone.
Sept 22. Today’s the act of terrorism’s anniversary. The tragedy is in the air even though the sky is blue. My favorite designers’ shows, Calvin Klein and Zac Posen, rescue me.
Path McGrath did the make-up for Calvin Klein. Fresh and light make-up suiting very simple and fresh dresses.
Zac Posen was not simple at all. Breathtaking gowns with long skirts, very complicated suits and architectural cutting – P Diddy, Demi Moore and Lucy Liu gave an ovation to the young genius.
I don’t go to London. Hooray! That’s why I have a week to rest and get some energy before the Milan’s shows.

Milan
I’m staying at my favorite hotel, Nhow. It doesn’t look like other hotels and reminds me of museum of contemporary art.
Sept 24. The week starts with D&G show. I hadn’t had such long and fierce hair for ages. Okay, I’m not taking the extensions off. We all wore denim and blouses with ruffles – every girl looked like a typical fan of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. At first I walk in a mini-skirt and then I have a transparent dress. It shows everything but I’m really afraid it will fall down. Happily, it didn’t. I need to go to Gianfranco Ferre show next. After designer’s death lots of people waited for the collapse of the house, but the collection happened to be very bright and unforgettable.
Sept 25. Today’s the big day. It’s the first time in 8 seasons that I take part in Prada show. It’s a new step in my career. Miuccia conquered me with her talent and professionalism. It’s silence and order at the backstage, but on the catwalk there are amusing and innovative clothes. Transparent dresses, jersey jumpsuits and 70s inspired variegated pants are the corner stones of the collection.
Sept 26. The big day again. I have two fittings before I’m going t open Roberto Cavalli show. I was walking on the catwalk hundreds of times, but I was never as nervous as right now. If I had to walk the second, nothing would happen. But here I felt like I was at the examination. I wore a long dress like Chekhov’s heroines would have and shoes with a giant platform. “How could I keep the balance in these? If I fall it’s the end of my career”, I thought before the start. But I passed the exam.
Gucci is maybe the most important show for me as I am their face. On the show they made a premier of a fragrance ad, a film I starred. David Lynch, master of mystic and sensuality, directed it. I was so nervous, I got the shivers and tears filled my eyes. I loved all the outfits. As for the accessories, I only buy Gucci and Chanel.
Sept 27. Versace is the sexiest collection. It’s a quintessence of Italian fashion. I would wear each single outfit on the red carpet. Donatella is crazy, superfunny and nice. You could hardly recognize me in the make-up. Bold black on the eyes, bright lips and flowing hair. We wore huge hills and seductive dresses while walking on the catwalk made of glass. This time Donatella surprised everyone choosing pale colours for the Versace dresses which is not typical for this house.
I feel almost flat-out. I get the auto-pilot mode. It all reminds me of tiresome endless race. I feel like it couldn’t be worse. I’m moving from Milan. In the airport – models only. At first I though “oh, I could sleep for 1,5 hour on the plane”. But I was wrong. As all the Russian mafia fills the plane, it gets loud and crazy in there. It’s the only time we can talk to each other, so nobody’s goig to sleep.

Paris
I stay in Park Hyatt. Very cozy atmosphere and the service is around the clock – that’s a priceless thing for a hotel. The food is awesome: the Cesar salad, risotto, potato puree. I’m a vegetarian so I can’t live without good garnish.
Sept 30. The Paris week starts with Balmain show. I open it. Christophe Decarnin makes the best cocktail dresses in the world. I got the khaki one – it’s sexy, feminine and very fashionable.
Oct 1. I can’t get enough of my Dior outfit. All the girls arrive 4 hours before the show. John Galliano doesn’t like to work in the fuss, so he gets lot of time for the preparations. Pat McGrath makes me look like a 1940’s actress (think of Marlene Dietrich). Huge semi-closed eyes, thin eyebrows and curly hair. I wear a long black skirt. Looks like I came off the cinema screen.
I have 30 minutes after the Dior show to get to the Isabel Marant show. The driver mixed up the address and took me to some deserted building. I got stuck in the elevator. Somehow I ran to the tent where the show was about to begin. I had a crazy hairdo and they wanted the hair to look natural.
They had to pour a couple of bottles of water on my head. Just when I put on a big top, Palestinian headscarf and black jodhpurs I had to run to the catwalk.
Since that moment my nerves begin to break. If I don’t know the make-up artist I start being harmful: “This brow is shorter than the other one!”. I just with nobody touch me without need.
Oct 2. The Balenciaga show starts at 9.30am so I have to wake up at 5am. I move like in a slow motion video. I can’t get into the outfit and five people try to put it on me.
I looked like an alien wearing those pants and top. I couldn’t sit down, couldn’t bend down or the suit would tear down.
Oct 3. It’s time for Karl Lagerfeld show. He’s genius. I don’t know any other designer who manages to prepare three brilliant collections per season. Karl made all the models look like rock stars.
Oct 4. Stella McCartney. The celebrity father of the designer always comes to the show. Next is Yves Saint Laurent: Stefano Pilati returned Helmut Newton’s style: the hair carefully gathered at the back, loose jackets and pants with the high waist.
Oct 5. Sonia Rykiel is the funniest and the craziest show. We look like forest nymphs with butterflies on our heads. First I walked in a sparkling latex swimsuit, and for the final all the girls put foam laces on and were dancing carelessly right on the catwalk.
Oct 6. John Galliano recreated the atmosphere of 1950s circus. I got the role of gypsy girl wearing a fluffy scarlet dress with flowers in my hair.
Oct 7. The Louis Vuitton closes the week. One hundred of models and ten ‘veterans’: Stephanie Seymour, Nadja Auermann, Naomi Campbell – all in the same nurse’s outfits. We wore colorful laces on the faces.
So that’s the end. Few glasses o champagne to celebrate the end of the season. We all worked really good. Now it’s time to have a rest.

ps sorry if it sounds a bit quirky.^_^

^ That was very interesting actually. Thank you for the translation! :woot:
