Perm’s Cinderella takes New York by storm

Natasha Poli flew to Russia in between modeling gigs to go to school

Natasha Poli is one of the world’s most sought after models, among the ranks of Heidi Klum and Giselle Bundchen. The 23-year-old is the face of the renowned brands Nina Ricci, Givenchy and Calvin Klein. Like many other Russian models before her, in an instant, Poli went from rags to riches.
Natasha’s real last name is Polevshchikova. However, she decided to go by the name “Poli,” which is easier for foreigners to pronounce. As a child, she was just an ordinary schoolgirl who loved drawing. Her father was the head of security at the Perm international airport and her mother was a housewife.
"I wound up in the modeling business by accident,” Natasha told KP. “My cousin Anna and I were drinking tea and flipping through magazines. I don’t remember which one of us found the announcement… that an international modeling agency was holding a contest in Perm. 'Let’s give it a try?’ we said. And shortly after, a 15-year-old girl who had never worked as a model before ended up winning the competition in Perm -- and later Moscow. I was supposed to fly to Milan for the final competition, but I didn’t have an foreign passport. But I finally got to Milan two months later and that’s where I signed my first modeling contract with Allberta Ferretti."

In between shows, Natasha flew back to Russia to go to school.
Natasha soon bought a computer with the money she earned, and in between modeling shoots she traveled to Perm to go to school.
"Nataliya Polevshchikova? How could I not remember her?” said her old physics teacher, Vladimir Miller. “She was a responsible girl. She was able to manage her studies and career at the same time. She always came to school in dress clothes. Because she came here to study -- not to boast that some model had just arrived.”
Natasha’s parents respected their daughter’s decision to start her career at such a young age.
"They supported me,” Natasha said. “My mother came with me to the shoots until I was 18."
When Natasha visits Perm, her old friends and acquaintances usually tell her that a model’s life is a fairytale. But that’s hardly the case. Her mother went to visit her in New York not long ago and was surprised by how hard her young daughter works.
"I only saw her in the evenings. She was so tired she would come home and just collapse on the sofa," she said.

Natasha and renowned Chanel designer Carl Lagerfeld.
Poli has a boyfriend. She says he’s a foreigner, but doesn’t want to give any other details about her personal life. She spent a long time moving around trying to build her career, but today resides in New York where she rents a two-story apartment. She recently got her driver’s license.
“I haven’t bought a car yet, though,” she said. "I don’t know in which country I should get my license.” But so far, she’s already bought her father a car -- on his 50th birthday.
