Nena was born in Mexico City to a German father and Swedish mother. Her family left Europe during war because her father made enemies by helping Jewish people during World War II. Her family eventually moved back to her mother's native Sweden were she was discovered by Norman Parkinson at age 14. She moved to London at age 15 where she went to school and modeled. By 17, Eileen Ford invited her to come to New York were she became very successful landing on the covers of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, and Glamour.
She married LCD guru and Harvard Professor Timothy Leary. The marriage was short lived and Nena remarried Robert Thurman, a Buddhist Monk and Harvard Professor. During this time, she began acting but eventually quit to focus on her family and eventually her doctoral studies in counselling psychology.
She is the mother of actress/fashion models Uma Thurman.
