The catwalk charts
As we get set for the next round of international ready-to-wear fashion shows starting with New York Fashion Week on February 4, a couple of astute Americans have launched a new website dedicated to tracking emerging trends in catwalk soundtracks. Entitled Music For Imaginary Runways, Lucian James (founder of the excellent Agenda.Inc and its American Brandstand chart) and partner Steve Middleton are determined to use the website to promote music outside the obvious catwalk mainstream and will publish their research on music selected to accompany fashion shows regularly. They are compiling playlists (in consultation with record companies) designed to complement the forthcoming autumn/winter 2005/6 collections.
According to Lucian, the music selected is "tailored to suit the mood of the season" which in effect means tracks way outside the electroclash genre which has dominated for the past few seasons. The pair hope the website will be a useful resource and want show producers, DJs and designers from London as well as other major fashion show cities to share their ideas and thoughts on music. "We believe that 2005 is the year when music and fashion will converge more than ever", says Lucian.
