New School of Rock vs. Old School of Rock

All this new rock is complete horsesh*t. Just READ the lyrics. They are stooopid. Rock has become the new Pop.

I couldn't agree more.

And where's the guitar? A lot of the great guitar solos/sounds date back to the 70's/late 60's.

yes!!, may coldplay's bus skid off the road :innocent:
thanks for the article, prince. :flower:
coldplay are so boring i cant even read about them or their lyrics.

today's 'rock'- all the riffs are so simple , even I can play them without making a mistake

plus, nobody is taking any risks musically

Good article.

Clearly, the guy who they talk to is an idiot. He talks about lyricists and doesn't mention Bob Dylan once. But just ignore him...

I read that on the train back from work. It's a good article, but yea, he did not have to bring those "experts" That just totally messed things up.

"But for me, lyrics have to feel like a piece of poetry." Well, woopty-f**ing-doo. Aren't you a genius?!

Agreed. Frankly, all of Coldplay's albums should be censored and each track replaced with Desolation Row.

And I'm not even a Young Fogey...

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to PrinceOfCats again.

FtB, Marquee Moon is one of my desert island albums... Television was part of the birth of the 70's NY punk scene, but that record transcends that time...

I'm an exile from the high street when it comes to buying music. I'm the dark and midnight creature that preys on independent record stores, and naturally...OLD STUFF...

Let's have some Marvin Gaye, Chuck, the Stones, The Band, The Eagles, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, anything with a backbeat will do.

MARVIN GAYE...all the R&B out right now has nothing on Maaaaarvin...there's a reason why it's dubbed "Rappin & Bullsh*t," and is no longer referred to as 'soul' like it was in the past (NO, I do not believe that neo-soul counts, that stuff is bland to me).

Soul music was the knock...and it's killing me I can't find the mix I made of soul classics a while back. Give me some "Natural High," "Let's Stay Together," "Pillow Talk," and y'all can have everything else.

jamie lidell has got soulllllll.... that man really does.

btw, the 90's had prime time of shoegazer (mbv, slowdive and chapterhouse, early ride and j&mc), the early post rock acts talk talk, bark psychosis, slint and i considered them as good alternative, new school of rock.

Shoegazing...that stuff sounds nice, like an orchestra of noise I can just find myself engulfed in. The only album I am acquainted with from this genre is Loveless by MBV, and it's a classic to me. Are there any similar albums you might recommend? Thanks in advance :flower:

i'd suggest souvlaki by slowdive. compared to mbv, they were more melodramatic, atmospheric side of ambient soundscapes by having brian eno as their main influence.

I am not with most of you I have to say. I think great bands are produced in every generation. I've quoted this before -I can't remember where it is from -but some record guy was saying how he has been looking for 'his' Clash his whole life. The band that would move him and inspire him and he thought by his 50s that he hadn't found them... till he heard The Libertines. I am a huge Libertines fan, and I am a huge Television fan and a Pistols fan... music sometimes is very 'of the moment' -which is why listening to the Smiths reminds me of 80s England and it is very nostalgic but I am not getting the full experience. Whereas listening to the Libertines NOW... well I can really feel it. It is all different and it is all good -if it is relevant to you.

However having said that -I take it back. It is clearly NOT all good. But why quote Coldplay and Keane when as John Harris says in the article, you could be quoting Bloc Party and Arctic Monkey? You have to look sometimes deeper into the underground than even that but it has always been the case. To be a musical conoisseur, you tastes will inevitably differ from the soppy masses. Initially whilst Elvis was blasting away, the crooners were still all over the airwaves. What did the previous generation think of the Jam? Probably not much but to me the are geniuses. Hence it is also about aclimitisation. I can't listen to Rap but some of the lyrics I am sure are sensational. I'll leave it to those for whom it is relevant though

So true... if I hear Leela James called 'Old School Style' one more time, I'm gonna :yuk:

Yeah, i say old rock. I have recently fallen in love with the stones. Most bands today are too... safe, is that the right word? Like franz ferdinand with their automatic beats... The music just doesn't move you like some old stuff did.
Maybe it's just that when you think of new rock, you think of mainstream bands. I'm sure there are indie bands that no one knows about that are amazing. Like teh velvet underground, who were completely ignored in their genereation, and now people realize how wonderful they are.

Safe is the right word. Ive noticed that bands havent been doing the 7minute 9minute songs for a long time now. All of your classic artists, The Doors, Led Zep, Small Faces, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath had these mammoth songs. Todays songs seem to last for a little over 3minutes. You dont get your Jimmy Page guitar solos or John Bonham drum solo songs anymore either.

I am seeing an emergence in ya classic rock bands like Wolfmother, Wolf & Cub. Wolfmother has the classic of classic rock tunes and uses a lot of keyboard/organ. Wolf & Cub have two drummers with 2 drum kits which really brings that raw quality back.

That is totally untrue. There are some great lyricists right now too. Rock and roll right now may be no where as exciting as in the 60s to 70s, but i think it's made a comeback in a way... I mean, i can't think of anything good that came out of the late 90s, but now we have some bands with potential...

I love all genre! What I love the most I wish would come back. Bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine, even Metallica!! Can't you tell my teenage years was in the 90's! OMG I remember hearing Nivana "smells like teen spirit" on the radio and I was like, this is different! This band f*cking rocks! It was a pivotal moment! Then bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, soon followed. Bands today are too "plastic". But If I was to pick few real good ROCK bands of today, they would be, B.R.M.C.-Cooper Temple Clause-The Black Keys-The Kills-The Duke Spirit, just to name a few. :D

Totally... I agree with all of that... and in a way, those grunge bands of the 90's were "dirty"... the rock today just totally lacks in SOMETHING. Maybe dirt. :)

Stripping all that old rock the only bands I enjoy are:The Doors,Sex Pistols,Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath.

The Stones are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO overrated. So they had like 3 hit singles BIG DEAL. They are in the same realm as Kiss. Apparently having a crazy singer and getting lucky with a legendary song makes you one of the best ever. What OTHER songs do they have? The albums themselves LACK.

Led Zep. is played out and while the band itself is not overrated I am SICK of hearing people say that Stairway to Heaven is "The greatest song ever." I'ts NOT.

I agree GENERATION X and 80's Pre THAT are ALSO extremely good.

GenX-
Jane's Addiction
Nirvana
Caifanes
Stone Temple Pilots

80's-
Slayer
Van Halen
Guns N' Roses
etc....

etc....

But to surprise all of you THE NEW AGE is THE BEST.

Do go deeper and look at the MIND BLOWING BANDS AROUND. THEY DO EXIST people just DON'T LOOK FOR THEM.It's HARD WORK so it is settled the mainstream decides wether you like new rock or not. JUST look a little more.

NIN
A Perfect Circle
The Mars Volta
Radiohead
Tool
Ima Robot
Dave Navarro (Solo)
Linkin Park
Sparta
At The Drive-IN

A bunch of Metal bands are pushing the genre like Sabbath did so IT is in a great state for Rock music.

Arch enemy
Lamb Of God
Mudvayne
Fear Factory
Strapping Young Lad

THERE IS NO CONTEST. NEW AGE....NUFF SAID.

Legendary song? Which one?

And the Stones had more than three hits. :) I think the Stones brought to us that real rock sound in the 60's... they're the epitome of rock 'n roll, if you ask me. You can jam to so many of their tunes, the guitar is great... they have a great energy.

Legendary song=Satisfaction

Now-I know they had more than three hit singles. :)

So-
Yah I do LOVE and respect your purist point of view. I agree with just about EVERYTHING you said. They WERE important but at the same time that makes them sound outdated. Now in days the new Cd's show NO originallity and altho they sell ok they aren't doing ANYTHING for music anymore. Suggesting one of those "right place at right time," moments. Which yeah I feel happy for them but still they are overrated.

GOOD BAND but
They are NOT the best rock band ever. LIKE EVERYONE CLAIMS.

Atleast, if anything ,we can catch their "las concert" in the year 2050. The stones are going to tour until they die. I MEAN yah they are going to tour until they faint on stage.........haha.

Mick settle for the Dior clothes! What ELSE does he need? I am saving my pennys up for that.^_^
