everytime i go there, it's to shop spices and middle eastern food items. i'll try to find a shop and would report if i find anything interesting.

Prince btw mott and lafayette which has stuff from Thailand maybe? i got some antique saris and silk scarves there a while back...

it always has great window displays. but last time i passed by it was closed, and i thought it was closed for good. but maybe i'm confused. because the website says it's on great jones, while it looks like one shop on rivington and somewhere btw orchard and suffolk.

anyway.

so i went in "India Town" this past sunday (of course went to DSM, too.....), and I found one shop where I bought a sarong. Actually, it is an indian fabric store where they make the "custom" for you. It is called Om Boutique, on 27th st. btw Lex and Park. Tiny boutique.... The lady owns the shop with her son. She is very nice !
I guess I'll hunt the hood more on week days to see if I can find other stores.

And now, I'm thinking of buying more fabrics to have things done just for me. Like tshirts or shirts (maybe shirts is more complicated). So I'm looking for a couturiere - in France, mum and grandma have this couturiere where they go to get things fixed, or tailored. She is a housewife who does everything in a studio in her garden. It seems far more complicated than I thought to find one in NYC.
Weeks ago, I went to Pins & Needles (on Lex and 74th st.), because I'm currently looking for fabrics to cover that ugly sofa we have home. Unfortunately, the fabrics were "clothes fabric" (cotton isn't really appropriate for "home" furniture cover, I guess), but I found some good stuff over here. The owner is very nice, and gave me good advices. She even gives sewing classes for kids in the 'hood. But when I asked her if she knows a good tailor/couturiere, she told me to go a dry cleaner, who also does tailor (like most dry cleaners here). But I'm not sure they will be able to do what I'm asking. I don't know.

Soft, do you know a good couturiere ?

as far as a tailor-
it's true...the best and almost the only way to find one is at a dry cleaner...
i guess you could get all creative and go up to FIT or Parsons and post a sign on their job boards...
maybe they have an online job board these days, i don't know...?
but maybe a fashion student would do something like that...
though- i confess, i think most of them would not be so great at it and probably think they are too fabulous for simple stuff...
i don't know...

i do think that if you go to a few dry cleaners you can find some very good tailors...
'the other option is some places on the lower east side or maybe chinatown...
though i don't know any names off the top of my head...

most tailors that i know thru work will not take private clients and anyway, they charge a fortune per day, rather than per garment...you book them thru an agent...

i'd love to find a little grandma or auntie to do some stuff for me as well...
i need to go fabric shopping - i got a vintage YSL pattern that i want to make up for fall...
maybe we can do that together?

Hello everyone

I'll be in New York next week, and I'm looking to pick up quality stationery (lined notebooks and planner). The selection isn't great where I'm from .. the best I can get are Moleskine and Leuchtturm1917.

Oh! and I'm also looking for smaller labels/boutiques with similar aesthetic to Acne, MMM, RO, MA+, Helmut Lang, etc.

^ Not in NY, but I get my lined notebooks at Barnes & Noble, a national chain ... they have a good selection. I'm sure there are specialist stationers in NYC too ... I have also gotten nice leatherbound ones at a gift shop here.

I have a US vs France question. So my mom is in town right now, and she wants to buy my brother his xmas gifts here. But the thing is that she does want to bring back some NY or US specific brands - something my brother wouldn't be able to find in France. I think in 2014 it is kind of difficult to find .... but .... who knows.

My brother style is a mix between sport chic and casual prep boy. He is something like in his early-mid 20s (yeah I know it is a shame I don't know my brother's age).

I thought about a shop in Alphabet City called Community 54, but this is probably too Hip-Hop for him. I'll go and check with her. Or the Toms shoes - they look kind of espadrilles, and are not available in France from what I know...

but if you have any idea ... Let me know.

well- the really american brands are pretty obvious...
jcrew, banana republic, club monaco, ralph lauren, gap, old navy
and they are all that sort of preppie/casual thing...
maybe that's boring but american menswear is pretty boring...
there is also a store in nolita called Gant that might be interesting and Schott on elizabeth st...
there are several good mens stores on elizabeth st right now, imo...
and also Filson on Great Jones...

i'm a little late, but my vote is also for filson. the quality is excellent.

personally, i do not like Toms shoes because i do not endorse the views of the CEO. i would research this before you buy.

New Yorkers...NEED HELP PLEEEEEEEZ

Hi all...so i'm going 2 NY on the 12 of September and i'm staying there for 5 days...
i'm on a budget guys...i need some advice on where to stay? where to go? what do ?? i want to enjoy these 5 days...and at the same time i don't have a clue what to do and how to start planning my trip...i'm a little intimidated ..
so i would appreciate any advice from ppl living there or even have been there...
anything you would say to help me out would be sooooooo appreciated

Hopefully you already have your place to stay ... the inexpensive places(fairly ... nothing is inexpensive in NY) fill up quickly. Check out hostels ... they are usually very affordable, because you share a bath, maybe even share a bunk room ... and the neighborhood may be just a bit dicey, but not if you do your homework and read all the reviews, first.

Be sure to check out Central Park ... because it's huge, beautiful and there are many things to do there. And most of it is free. Also check out the Chelsea Market ... a fun place to shop for food and some clothing ... and it's right next to the High Line ... which is one of my favorite things to do... to walk along there and people watch and get a birds eye view of that part of the city and the Hudson River. The High Line is a park ... but it's built on raised railroad track and it runs for several miles. It's free too. The weather should be very nice this time of year.

I like the little hole in the wall places to eat ... rather than expensive restaurants. Look around for them ....you can get pizza by the slice, hot dogs from carts, soup and a sandwich, breakfast ... and it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

If you like fashion, for high end stuff ... you can window shop along Madison Ave. uptown. Mid town, you can tour FIT ... one of the best fashion schools in the world give free tours ... see this link: https://www.fitnyc.edu/visit/

New York (at least Manhattan) is a walking town ... so be prepared to walk a lot. The last time I was there on vacation, I walked an average of 5 miles a day. It's actually a pretty small city ... considering how many millions of people live there.

Not up on shopping ... because it's not something I do much there, but there is a ton of it, that's for sure ... see this thread for shopping ideas.
