She’s definitely mixed and has some African ancestry (the Hispanic roots you noticed in her childhood pictures include African, Native American, as well as European). However, all this talk of her being HALF black is a bit over the top. She’s about as half black as India Arie is half white. Of course people are free to call themselves whatever they want.

People's roots are people's roots. They're not deniable by anyone, whether or not they're apparent in one's face or social class. Excluding someone because they're not "black enough" or "NdN enough" or "Jewish enough" for one's liking does not change the truth of someone's family history, whether you can see it or not. Nicole Richie has a mixed genetic background, and was raised in a black family; she identifies as black, and I have no reason to rob that from her because she doesn't fit my idea of blackness. To do as such is as racist as the stupid comments Paris Hilton makes--that is, not all that much, but it's still annoying at the end of the day.
