scans from the book the velvet underground: a new york art

I haven't been here for a while. I'm loving all the new photos in this thread! :woot:

Thanks Atooomic, that is the first photo I have seen of Nico and Edie together. In Nico's bio it said there were more photographs taken of the two. I really want to see this particular set!

source: pg. 139, Nico: The Life & Lies of an Icon by Richard Witt.

On 9 January the group, with Nico and absolutely everybody else, gave an unorthodox public rehearsal at the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry's annual dinner at the dapper Delmonico Hotel. Warhol had been asked to give a lecture, and instead he proposed a 'performance'. There were some photographs of the occasion showing Edie dancing the Watusi next to a notably rigid Nico. Ultra Violet was there, too, and described the event as 'Andy and the Underground giving shock treatment to the 175 well-dressed shrinks, and their perfumed, carefully coiffed wives'.

It could be her too, atooomic. Now I'm even more confused. (Haha.)

Don't feel bad, I thought a photograph of Catherine James was Edie Sedgewick for the longest time. Guess it wasn't only me because it was posted in the Edie thread a couple of times. In Nat Finkelstein's book, The Factory Years the photo was labeled as being Edie, but on his website he labeled it Cathy Star f--ker, that confused me for a long time. Catherine was also a stand-in for Diane Keaton, she's a very talented double ;)

Here's some of the footage of that

I've seen a lot of pictures of Edie dancing on stage at that event and also some of Nico singing but i've never seen one of them together. I hope it turns up somewhere someday!

Babydoll

How do you go about finding all these clutch Nico photographs, babydoll1125? I enjoy all your new posts...you help keep the spirits alive!

Thank you! I just search on the internet if i have time and whenever i'm in a bookstore i always look to see if there are any books with Nico in them. :)

I just finished reading James Young's biography about touring with Nico ('The End'). I wasn't expecting her last years as a heroin addict to be glamorous or anything, but wow, they sounded so bleak. I was pleasantly surprised to hear she visited the area where I live though (Perth, Australia) as it's the most remote city anywhere.

Nico Speaks

Thanks for the response, babydoll.

I thought The End was very well written and i want to read it agian because it's been awhile. On the CD Nico Icon there's a half hour interview with Nico in Austalia and she talks about the tour. It's been discontinued but it's on ebay sometimes...

I haven't read The End or any primary Nico books, only some on the Velvet Underground as a group.

I have that interview track (it's on the Icon CD, as well as another rare collection piece I can't recall at the moment)...it's a collection of various Nico soundbytes & interviews collected over the years. I like it. I can put it on sendspace or some share site for any interested parties. (That's okay to do on this forum, no?)

i would love to hear those clips too !

here's a brief list of nico appearances as a model on other people's records:

also, i think nico appears on the cover of otis redding's classic record otis blue.

pete sahula took the picture, says allmusic.com

also i found this trivia:

Interview

Babydoll, that's the only "interview" track I've found (that was released in album format). It's just dubbed "interview," although it's really several short interviews streamed together over a decade or so of radio shows & live sessions or what not.

By others...do you mean the rest of the Icon album, because I do not have that in my possession anymore (and besides the interview piece it's all recycled material--as most Nico CD's have been since the late 80's).

I would like to speak French! But I do not as of yet.

Hope you enjoy the interview! :D

Ohh i see. I have the Nico Icon CD but i forgot that there was more than one interview on that track.
