Vogue.it interview

"What makes acting different is that you get a voice. You're not just a picture"

Famous because
She's young but she has already had a long modelling career. She has achieved real fame, though, thanks to her role as Heidi, the enchanting predatory vampire in New Moon, the second film in the Twilight saga.

Her style
Grunge, as you'd expect for someone born near Seattle.

Zoom
At the tender age of 13, Renata (her real name) was a young girl who, like many others, used to go shopping in her local mall, when she was spotted by a talent scout who liked her sophisticated Nordic beauty.

Noot did not particularly like school - her one passion was horses (she is a former horse-riding champion). She was already very independent - so much so that when she was given the chance to work as a model, she did not take too long thinking it over. She did a few shows in her home town, Vancouver, and then when she was 14 left for New York along with her agent.

Her family origins are Swedish, English, Dutch and Scottish, combining the best of her European great-grandparents. She immediately began to work with the photographer Mario Sorrenti. She did catwalk shows for Daril K, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren.

She became the face of a range of different fashion labels: Chanel, Kenzo, Neiman Marcus, Rolex, and especially Yves Saint Laurent, - she made a fantastic Mona Lisa for their Rive Gauche campaign.

She also endorsed two perfumes: CK One by Calvin Klein and Vera Wang by Vera Wang. Then came other campaigns, such as for Giorgio Armani, and magazine covers: D, Japanese Vogue, Elle, Amica, Cosmopolitan and Harper's Bazaar.

She was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, Russell James, Raymond Meier and Paolo Roversi.

She was photographed with Justin Timberlake for the Givenchy campaign for the perfume Play for Her.

She did catwalk shows for, among others, Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga.

She is very involved in charity work and has started a New York branch of Rose Charities. This has let her develop several humanitarian projects, from help for orphanages in Vietnam to improvements to hospital buildings in Cambodia and aid for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, and make a personal contribution to the work.

She also runs Bebare, a charity auction that sells clothes worn by models and actresses. She has always wanted to be an actress and had taken lessons with Alan Savage, who advised her to wait for the right role before jumping in.

Her time with Twilight was a success, and she has been contacted for a couple of independent productions - the doors to Hollywood seem to have inched open. She has even moved to Los Angeles, after 12 years of New York life.

Her first name comes from the lullaby her mother used to sign her when she was a child.

Doesn't leave home without
Hair and jewellery spray. In public Often wears black - sometimes a sexy suit, at other times a plunging mini dress with a hat or vintage hat to downplay the effect.

In private
"I'm a Canadian girl, I only feel happy in jeans and a check shirt."

With one of her many vintage rock and metal t-shirts underneath.

Shoes and bags
Louboutin and McQueen heels - she loves studs and fringes. Men's customised two-tone All Star lace-ups. Motorcyclist's boots - obviously.

She carries an unused black Chanel 2.55 like an accessory, like many other people.

Jewellery
Ethnic, silver, bought all over the place or from Loree Rodkin.

She loves bracelets and rings especially, and has lots of them.

Favourite item of clothing
A black velvet evening dress that she was given as a birthday present a few years ago. She has a collection of lots of different types of gilet, in a range of fabrics. She is never separated from her old leather motorcyclist's jacket.

Favourite designers
Balmain, Balenciagia, Givenchy, Elise Øverland.

Favourite city
Where she's living now.

Favourite film
Blade Runner.

Favourite book
Since doing New Moon, she has started to read teen novels and comics again.

Favourite food
Muffins with raspberries.

Loves
Playing chess. Since her father taught her to play, it has been a real habit of hers, an addiction. It is the only thing that keeps her company when she was a teenager and travelling for work.

Hates
Loneliness.
