One year enough for fashion study?

Hi,
I'm going to study business administration or architecture for 3 years (still can't decide yet) and film making for 1 year (I prefer New York Film Academy). In the following, I'd like to study fashion in Paris or New York. My question is if you believe that 1 year will give me all the abilities I needed to enter the fashion industry?
I don't wanna spend 10 years on studies. Can I really create a whole collection after just one 1 year of study? Am I qualified anyway? Can I work for int'l magazines and brands? My questions seem to be weird but I really can't help myself. I don't know what ppl would think of my portfolio when I'm applying for jobs.

One year will give you basics, but of course like anything you need a lot of time to develop yourself completely and improve on skills you've learned

Hi Teddy,
I am no expert in this but I mean, there really isn't a thing as impossible, if you would like to study fashion for one year then come out and start your own line, then by all means do it.
But you better make the most out of that year, work really hard, use that year to learn all the things that normal people taking the whole course would take 2/3 years to do. Then you will benefit a lot
The choice is on you, if you want to make it big without much practice/expertise, then you just have to work hard and be your own teacher
There are loads of designers out there who never had any proper fashion training but is regarded as one of the best in the industry.
Although those people are often the exceptionals and minorities, you can just be anyone of them if you work hard. and also LUCK

cool thank you guys for your words...well, I forgot to add that I don't have much money to study 5 years long fashion...this is the reason why I chose to do it in a short-term...the film study costs me almost 20,000USD for one year already

I don't know how much debt I've accumulated lol

By the way teddy, just remember school isn't the only place to learn
You'll learn while interning, working for someone else, from other people you meet, and also on your own, etc.!

really depends what you want to do. school gives you the basics but you really learn in the fashion industry by doing it and seeing how things work. try to get an internship to see how things run. i personally think that unless you are a designer and need specific skills, you don't really need any special formal education though having one is certainly more desirable.

As someone who has already spent two years studying fashion design, and is strongly considering two more, I'd say that one year really isn't enough. In a way, if you aren't already passionate about designing, that first year is really when you figure out if it is for you. Plus, in my experience, the first year is the hardest because it's all about learning more than creating, learning to sew, learning to drape, learning to illustrate, learning to draft flat patterns....

But as everyone said, work experience is a whole different story, you learn things there that no ammount of classes can teach you.

honestly, im in my second year of fashion design in Toronto, One year is not enough... the amount of samples i have to sew and drafting techniques learned is immense. To digest all that info fast enough in one year of study i would honestly tell you to keep practicing your skills untill you feel sure enough to embark on your own thing....

No. Get an internship if you can't cope with the tuition. But to be honest, the fashion industry if tough enough to get into anyway. Why would you go and study two other things before hand if it's fashion you want to go into?

we're a term into our 4 year sandwich degree after doing a year of art foundation at other universities

you might have issues with credits, and remember people start their graduate collections in the first term of the final year. so you wouldn't find the time to start from scratch. also is your french good enough to study in paris? studying abroad is always expensive, but if you want to do fashion, why are you studying film for a year in the middle? it's far from a walk in the park if you fancy just doing it to learn the skills
