Overrated/Underrated

Overrated:

Franz Ferdinand
The Strokes
The Libertines
Death Cab for Cutie
Belle&Sebastian
Coldplay (!!!)
Keane
Gwen Stefani

(ohh I like these bands loads but I still think they're overrated)

Underrated:

Metric
Broken Social Scene
Moloko
& many more..

The Pixies were never recognized as widely as they should have been. They were a HUGE influence on many many bands including Nirvana. I believe Kurt Cobain even admitted that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a "Pixies ripoff." That said, there must be a reason they were never embraced by the mainstream. Probably because they never really "sold out," and continued to make confusing, genre-bending records . . . there's a huge contrast between Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, their lyrics are at times incomprehensible and aren't exactly "light" material. It's got a lot of depth and I guess, since they disbanded so quickly, they never got the chance to really catch on.

Other bands/artists already mentioned I'd like to rehash: Tom Waits (although I assume this is because his voice is not for everyone), Dinosaur Jr., MBV, THE FLAMING LIPS!!

New additions: Acid Mothers Temple, Can, Charles Manson, The Dears, Sean Lennon, Slowdive, Vanilla Fudge, Do Make Say Think, Olivia Tremor Control!, Polaris/Miracle Legion, Lightning Bolt & all noise rock actually, 2 Skinnee J's, etc. that's enough huh....

OVERRATED: (for most of the indie rock scene anyway) *NOTE not that I think any said bands are bad/uncreative, that I don't like them, but I do believe there is a lot of said hype: Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith, The Mars Volta, The Shins, anything like that... in general: the freakin' guitar-man singer/songwriter revolution! John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, et al.

Yes, I'm inclined to disagree, but that's only because I don't understand why you consider them "overrated." In what sense of the word? None of these bands or musicians (save for possibly Neil Young) have ever really broken out into mainstream to allow them to become "overrated."

Now, even though Neil Young is widely acknowledged & known, I wouldn't call him "overrated," because he hasn't gotten too much else besides, well, he gets played on the radio, many people, typically older, listen to his music & enjoy it, but it is not as though he is on the same scale as, say, Bob Dylan in terms of recognition/appreciation. I believe, if anything, that Neil Young is underrated in relation to lyric/song-writing. I believe he should be on the same scale as Bob Dylan.

I'd be willing to agree to disagree if I just knew why you conisder ANY of these musicians "overrated."

^ "Overrated" in the sense that they are the regular and repeated subjects of massive critical acclaim which I believe is in gross excess of what they justly deserve.

^ Because I don't think they make good music. I'm well aware that I'm quite alone in my dislike of these artists - pretty much everyone I know (and whose musical tastes I respect) seems to disagree. But I happen to think they suck, so by my standards they are overrated.

can i just throw in the overrated list Architecture in Helskinki?

I got their album last year, it's been on my ipod until yesterday because i couldnt face the fact that they're abominable, their songs are awful, pathetic, ridiculous, i gave In Case We Die a hundred tries and still, i thought i was dumb for not getting the fuss but no, they're really that bad.

i can't understand how someone can think that belle and seb are underated i

 everything they done and i can't get enough of listening... i really like eliott smith though he might got a little bit overated because of all the publicity after his tragic death, and mullet proof if you don't like architecture in helsinki maybe exprimental twee is just not your cup of tea...

i think that ovverated and underated has a lot to do with ones own personal taste. There's one exception though and that is when money's involved and magazine write and videos are played cause there is commercial interest.

or sometimes when music journalist totally hype things as quick as they can before everyone else does.

I tend to think most things are overrated. Music has been disappointing me terribly lately.

Mission of Burma, on the other hand, is definitely underrated.

Totally. I don't appreciate the new school of rock, so much, and the rest that is left seems to be hip-hop.

Overrated, to me, The Killers.

i agree with you about missy, but that is the australian way- build them up to vertigo- inducing heights, and then tear them down... i think she will follow in deltas footsteps and catch the tall poppy syndrome soon. (ps i like your avavtar, mine is dali too.)

i think someone mentioned the cocteau twins as being underrated and i agree. i just saw a movie, Mysterious Skin, that Robin Guthrie did the score too- it was the most beautiful music.

also imo Dungen is very underrated- ta det lugnt is amazing, but i've heard that the new cd is not so great
