Honestly, this is my favorite designer in NYC right now. The quality is superb. Strong vision. Excellent tailoring. It would be really easy to dismiss this as another celine/derek lam/sportswear showing but the pieces are really exceptional and consistent. Hope they get more money to grow the brand.
I hope so too.
The tailoring and quality is luxuriously impressive; just the detail on the ribbed tank top alone is gloriously gorgeous. I absolutely get why some are excited by this. But again, the designs are everything we’ve already seen before by more established names. And you know, the sharply-pleated below the knee skirt worn with these immaculately-cut wide pant that was first shown at Gaultier Paris Couture 20 years ago is the stuff of heavenly fashion iconography when you see it in motion. At this point in time though— it’s become such a common trope in editorial styling, that to use that now as a major look for your label’s presentation just strips away his brand’s identity (or lack thereof one) even more.
I get it— it’s enough at times like these to give someone, anyone, a pass who's able to offer masterful tailoring and exquisite construction, and all with such gorgeous fabrics, rather than the dreaded affirmative-action “representation”.... Because the flipside are the likes of Siriano and that Christopher John Rogers person— whose home ec class-quality tailoring and discount fabrics looks cannot
not be noticed and ends up the only memorable thing about them— and not in a good way. Still, some fresh ideas from Peter Do would and should be expected. Frankly, if I’m being completely honest, all the Asian-American designers— and I
wish they were ripe with fresh and daring ideas because I’d love to support asian talent, and as impressive and high in quality as their wares may be, all blur and blend into one another taht I really do wonder what is the point if they’re so devoid of a personality, let alone any fresh ideas???
