Petra Nemcova - In Thailand

0,,2004600365,00.jpg

AN international supermodel was left with serious injuries last night — and her British boyfriend was missing after they were swept away in Thailand.

Petra Nemcova, 25, was on a beach in Phuket when the wave hit, but managed to grab hold of a tree.

She clung to it for EIGHT HOURS despite shattering her hip, breaking other bones and damaging internal organs.

But there was no news of her boyfriend Simon Atlee, a London-based photographer who was inside their holiday bungalow. Simon, 31, was engulfed by the wave and swept away.

Czech-born Petra has dated him for two years. Her New York publicist, Rob Shuter, said: “Petra is in hospital in deep shock and pain. “She was clinging to this tree for hours. Simon is still missing. Our focus is to do everything we can do to find him. Petra started crying when she mentioned his name. They have been very happy together.”

Petra is one of the top supermodels in the business. She was the cover girl for the 2003 Sports Illustrated magazine’s famous swimsuit issue and now models for lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret.

Just thought some of you would like to hear about that, it's tragic.

that's awful. clung to a tree for 8 hours. i'm majorly impressed miss petra

Not to take away from the enorimity of the disaster but its bizarre how many "recognised people" are always involved in the worlds disasters;
the Thai Kings grandson is dead aswell
and an Australian sporting star is reported dead.

My heart goes out to all the poor people who have and who are suffering

omg poor girl it must've been horrible for her.
I saw Nate Berkus (of Oprah fame) on CNN and he was in Sri Lanka with a group of friends with no food & no water. Can you imagine what it's like for the locals.

OMG!

Where did you find that article?

oh no! how terrible! I hope they find her boyfriend and that she heals well...this was such a terrible tragedy on a scale that hasn't been heard of for a long long time...

During August and December the fashion industry almost shuts down. I knew many of the models with money would be of vacationing in exotic places. I wondered if any of them were in SE Asia when I heard the news on the disaster. Thanks for posting,I hope she's better soon. I posted a thread in body and soul about how terrible a disaster this was.

that's an awful Joke, considering she lost her bf, and maybe she won't be able to model swimsuits again. She fracturedd her hips, right?

That's what I was thinking about... Her sister is trying to get her to USA or Czech Republic. Petra bought this trip for her and her boyfriend as a surprise.

I feel really bad for her, I'm sure modelling is her bread and butter. She's a commercial model w/c pays even more than runways or high fashion.

I'm sorry to hear that i hope she'll be fine soon and found her boyfriend really soon as well. Many survivors climbed tree for their lifes, that was sad :( I'm here in Thailand, things are so sad but everybody's trying to help out. It's such a nice things to do when our human fellows are in troubles.

Someone else said it too, but there is a topic about the tsunami on the Body and Soul thread. My heart goes out to Petra and her family as well as her boyfriend's family. It also goes out to the 40,000+ who also died in this horrible tragedy.

May - good to hear that you are okay. I am assuming that you were in an elevated area? It would be horrible to witness the turmoil.

May, could you give us some more news on how things are? We are listening to the major news channels but it comes in bits and pieces. Is there any relief effort going on in your area? There is a thread in the body and soul topic where you could post this. Thanks MM

I forgot to mention the title " What does it take to wake some people up?"
