review (style.com)
NEW YORK, September 14, 2006 – The Susan Dell-backed Phi line continues to evolve in a carefully measured way, with designer Andreas Melbostad honing in on a new, tightly defined area each season. Inspired by, among other things, the moody, misty photographs of Deborah Turbeville, Melbostad said goodbye to fall's tailored coats and strong shoulders in favor of multilayered ensembles (many had five elements) made of white, pink, and black silk and chiffon. One tank dress featured sequins embroidered on tulle in a Renaissance pattern, paired with a delicate bra and a flounced skirt. A white dress with flower appliqués was a crowd favorite, and finely knit Henleys worn over sheer culottes proved an interesting study in texture and opacity.

Phi is about consistency, not variety, but some of Melbostad's many variations on a few silhouettes shaded into the repetitive. They were, however, as meticulously made as ever, with a youthful appeal that might speak to the customer who liked fall's wispy, Biba-esque dresses.

Thanks! I like it, love the outfits in the first two posts and the very last one the most. Pretty dresses! :)

it's an okay collection....i like the muted colours and the white/grey prints...
to be perfectly honest i'm not really a spring person - too many skirts, which i am not partial to, and not enough pants, which i an VERY partial to!
i like all the pockets though....

What a pity that Phi has turned into a crappy mess after such a promising start... I am not getting the much-hailed consistancy that the press is talking about all the time, I don't get how the same woman would turn from tough rock-chic towards floaty, transparent nightgowns, via Biba-esque/Ossie Clark-ish printed Silk dresses and blouses...

Obviously the money and the skill is there to execute ideas and concepts in a professional manner but so far, the label misses an identity or a signature of it's own.

I agree with you entirely in that I was desperately trying to find some solid trousers and jackets in here... instead, all these shapeless chiffon-dresses that only look good on a modeltype.

Please, I don't see anybody buying these clothes, but who cares as long as Susan can celebrate herself as the uncrowned fashion queen in her circle of Texan women who lunch...?

:innocent:

^^^^
heee, too true...i remember seeing the Fall 2005 show, and thinking it was nice, but a little over hyped - and then all the hype was explained when i learned Susan Dell's her husband is the owner of dell computers....
i bet if 90% of the struggling designers in North America had the budget that she provided Tim Gardner with, they would blow this out of the water...

I prefer the 06ss collection. A lot of the pieces give a tacky lingerie vibe :ninja:
