Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2014

Thanks Marc10 for the posts.

This guy is not a designer. He's a buyer who just offers his versions of the latest fashions. His offerings are so blatantly derivative of so many of the designs offered by other designers: It's like a little from Dries, a little from Riccardo, a little from Phoebe, and of course, always a lot from Nicolas. And it's all pulled together in such a messy, incoherent fashion that makes his "collections" always look like the racks of the junior section of a department store rather than a thoughtfully edited, directional offering from a designer.

I agree with the references made above by Phuel but I also feel he's a great designer nonetheless, the cohesiveness was lost during the process because I love the black looks and the final gown on Mijo. It's beautiful but I feel it's missing Prabal touch that I love so much in his work.

Yes, it's uninspired and not really anything too new or stand-out, but I kind of like a lot of it.

Just in time for Christmas, wouldn't you say? :P

Phuel has touched a great point about the direction in his collections - or the lack of it. It's always a big jumble of different ideas, sometimes even rolled into one, and it doesn't look cohesive or charming at all. It seems like he just wants to please all kinds of clients and trends, throwing confetti to whoever wants to catch it. And there are a few beautiful pieces here (I'm quite taken by the black and white draped long-sleeved dress in post #2) but it's all buried underneath the scattering of other, not-so-flattering offers. He really should learn how to stick to his strenghts...

Its like Raf Simons, Oscar De La Renta and Dries Van Noten's Offcuts that Parbal found at TK/TJMaxx....
