Provocative / Offensive Ads #1

I personally think they're in very poor taste. And I can easily see why people would be offended by them.

Benneton has a habit of being "in your face" with reality. I guess reality hurts for some... people.

I think it's missing the point as to why "some... people" including me are put off by those ads. It's not that reality hurts and I want to pretend those things dont' exist or that I want only the good to be shown or talked about. What irks me personally is that they're trivializing such incredibly personal, tragic and large issues by using them for nothing more than to sell clothes. I can do just fine with 'in my face reality', but I can't stand when someone tries to make money off on that. I think it's incredibly tacky, inconsiderate and disrespectful.

Just my two cents.

I don't see what's so horrible about the Benetton ads, I think some of them are weird however some actually make a point.

^ Exactly. The ads go along with the whole message and meaning that the brand wants to portray.

A shoe store called MD launched a campaign to promote their next collection of shoes with the slogan “it is to die for.” On one of the posters, there is the body of a dead girl lying on the sofa, and on the poster, there is another girl, who is dead in a morgue or a hospital, both of them are wearing a beautiful pair of brand new shoes, both of them dead.”

I'm actually doing an assignment on a provocative ad, a Sisley one where models appear to be snorting drugs. It was quite interesting to analyse and I got to talk about the risque Benetton adverts.

Sisley always pushes on social boundaries...it sexualizes the whole brand - which isn't a bad thing at all. I can't say that I've seen the ad you're referring to - do you happen to have a photo to share?

The "Fashoin" ad? i think it's somewhere in this thread.

I didn't see the other ads but I do like the ad in #815. I think it's kind of cool.

Some more Benetton ads...

It's obvious why some Benetton ads are deemed offensive, can you really question that when you look at the second ad and consider the role of African-American women as nursemaids in history? Benetton attempts to say we are all equal in an extremely superficial way.

Well for that second Benneton ad, a lot of us, myself included, are offended by public breastfeeding, so that's why it's offensive to me. Also it would offend a lot of people because gasp!-it's a nipple showing.

This is where you got it wrong. These ads have nothing to do with selling clothes. Benetton supports different causes and this has been going on forever, almost since the foundation of the company. They put their logo simply to let people who is behind the campaign.
I can't deny the extra publicity though (of course).

What is superficial about it?
