Purple Magazine F/W 2017.18 : The 25th Anniversary Issue

Oh good grief with the 25 covers…

I get that it’s ironic-chic for these insider publications to do the deliberately ugly, low-tech yearbook layout from 1973, but when you’re all doing it— including POP and MAS to such an obnoxious extend, it all feels so… common… And still they have to put Coach on the cover— you’re so indie LOL

(Slick Woods looks like a toddler— like literally a 5yo’s head. So unsettling-- I think I love it. I also do love the Chloe shot. Besides it being the Chloe I’ve adored since I was a kid watching her in Kids, it’s a well-styled and gorgeously composited shot— which seems to be a rare thing to see in these types of too-cool-to-make-an-effort rags these days.)

Thanks guys for the pics.

25 covers. I already feel an headache..

on the colette site it has these names under the contents:

Guinevere van Seenus
Susan Cianciolo
Chloë sévigny
Rila Fukushima
Amanda Wall
Stella Tennant
Anja Rubik
Slick Woods
Jamie Bochert
Sky Ferreira
Saskia de Brauw
Anna Cleveland
Kiki Willems
Alex Wek

The casting actually doesn't sound too bad. Way too little guys, and I'd definitely remove Slick Woods, Sky and Stella from the list. Photography so far also looks like a mixed bag, but I bet Harley Weir or Collier Schorr's names will pop up with the remainder of the covers. Not looking forward to it though.

Can someone post the good cover pls

I'm ready

The Kiki Willems cover actually features Paul McCarthy, so it's not about her. As with Grace in Coach, Kiki is also dangling head backwards off a chair.
There's a Commes cover as well, can't make out who the girl is because the outfit just about consumes all of her. And Eva Herzigova in Saint Laurent, presumably shot by Teller as well.

Not all the covers feature people. From what I can tell there may be 2 x still life covers - one showing a cacti and another shot of a vintage car by Richard Prince, I think.

And Eva Herzigova in Saint Laurent, presumably shot by Teller as well.

Or more surely by Katja Rahlwes. The photographer shares pictures on her instagram with the # purplefashionmagazine . And indeed it's Juergen Teller style.
Glad to read Eva Herzigova has a cover !

Purple Fashion Magazine issue 28 also includes interviews with photographer WOLFGANG TILLMANS, fashion designer HAIDER ACKERMANN, iconic American artist RICHARD PRINCE, and contemporary artist JORDAN WOLFSON, … and a special edition Purple Book and Cover by brilliant multidisciplinary artist PAUL MCCARTHY.

Purple will release one of the covers on Purple Diary everyday; today we present the Purple 25th anniversary Special Cover featuring SASKIA DE BRAUW wearing the Calvin Klein 205W39NYC first collection, shot by COLIN DODGSON and styled by VANESSA REID.

“Twenty-five years already! It went so fast! When I created Purple with Elein Fleiss and a group of artists in Paris in 1992, starting a magazine was not an option: we had to do it, no matter what! With no money, using a home computer, a Macintosh 512K, we stayed up late at night, squatting a friend’s gallery to use the computers and printer… The urgency was to shape our lives, to do it for us and an emerging generation coming after one that seemed so much more powerful: the ’80s.

My generation earned worldwide success, so we don’t need a magazine anymore. It’s been years now that younger generations don’t use magazines to express themselves — at least not the way we did back in 1992. Social media now generally satisfy the need for images, contacts, and creativity. Publishing a magazine has become so expensive… An actual print object like Purple is a luxury item, which is why new alternative magazines don’t last more than a few years, are often bought, or simply disappear.

Doing a luxury magazine today is one of the paradoxes of the Instagram era, when such things cost nothing… A magazine is not an ego trip… It’s a collective work by a group of creative people who believe in the artistic value of the print media and share a similar vision. (Thanks to all of them!) Every image, every single text, the choice of paper, the layout, even the choice of typefaces matters. Everything matters… Purple is made to last. Purple is made to capture a moment every season… In this period of global Internet obsession and digital amnesia, I think that means something”— says Editor-in-Chief OLIVIER ZAHM in his editor’s letter.

well i guess i'll get wolfang's cover. i wonder if there'll be a way to choose a cover on the purple website? colette used to have the option to choose a particular mag cover but not in this case.

Purple may be insufferable at times, but I absolutely agree with his assessment on the state of fashion publication these days. No one seems to have a confident direction anymore. Of all the big mainstream rags, only Emmanuelle actually has a consistent and unfiailing confidence with her point of view. The only one. Look at the mess VI is simmering in currently.

Interested in Slick, Chloe and of course, the untoppable Guinevere's covers. No way am I getting all 3 though. Slick's is the one...

I've checked in the stores earlier, still no sight of any of these 25 covers. I'm really dead set on the Coach cover, but Anna's one by Sassen intrigues me. Missoni should never have gotten rid of her.
