Comme des Garçons' Rei Kawakubo creates design within design within design
NEW YORK - Friday, August 27, 2004
When the Dover Street Market opens this coming fall at 17/18 Dover Street in London, the spot is sure to become a mecca of design. The space, occupying six floors and 3,600 square-feet will house Comme des Garçons designer, Rei Kawakubo’s new interactive market. Situated in the center of London, the market is to be a synergetic yet independent community of various designers and creators from many fields. "I want to create a kind of market where various people from all walks of life gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of strong and beautiful chaos: the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls," explained Kawakubo.
A mesh of retail, gallery, and event space, the market will feature Hedi Slimane’s furniture collection and all the brands of Comme des Garçons. Additionally, they are currently in the final stages of negotiations with Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Raf Simons, Azzedine Alaïa, and Undercover. Negotiations are also going on with Judy Blame, Terry de Havilland, Emma Hawkins antiques, Decades owner Cameron Silver, Rough Trade music, and Nick Knight’s show studio.
As for the space itself, Kawakubo is working with theatre and film designers to create changing backgrounds and atmospheres that will interact with the spaces of each creator in an accidental and synergistic manner.
