Richard Quinn S/S 2023 London

Rei sure is an influential designer, isn't she?
In all seriousness though, keep the first half, ditch most the second and we're going somewhere.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the first half and found myself actually liking it…then the second half came and my hopes came crashing down. It’s a definite improvement but I’d love if he managed to get away from all the Valentino and Balenciaga in his moodboard.

The mourning theme at the beginning couldn’t have been done at a better time, with the Queen’s funeral taking place just yesterday. Lucky Richard!

If he had made the whole collection black, it would have been much better overall.

It seems that Richard also discovered some of the old Viktor&Rolf collections. I don't know, I feel like this whole show should have been based on the first half. That would have been much more effective, considering that Elizabeth II attended his show few years ago. The rest, however, makes no impact and the color palette is rather questionable.

the first 22 looks are unbelievable. absolutely love them but I’m extremely biased as I’m a sucker for all black outfits.
and then it gets not so good. mostly because the colours get random.

had Richard kept it all black like some other TFS’ers pointed out and it would’ve been an amazing collection.

now if only we had Franca to come up with one of those collections editorials like the one in July 2012 (Karl Templer and Meisel)…

^^^ Franca of course would have produced a 30pg story shot by Steven Klein and starring a cast of not just Supers, but Immortals. But that’s all in the past of a golden era.

I would venture to guess the mourning looks were a last minute tribute. And beautifully pulled off. Whether people support and admire the monarchy is besides the point: I’ve grown up all my life with her presence, and although I’m not a fan of the monarchy, her passing does deserve a moment of respect and reflection for an individual who’s lived such a full life. Richard being English, made a gentlemanly gesture with the means available to him, which all but seems forgotten these days of me me me and more promoting me, myself and I.

The all-black looks are actually gorgeous. Looks extremely well-crafted lace and embellishments that, toned down in simpler and classic forms, would be lovely artisanal designs to cherish.

The rest is his usual clownery fodder.

I think he already had the bulk of the black outfits and just needed to add in a couple more, swap the order around, chuck on extra veils and then you have an impactful first half. What are probably the more last minute of everything actually has more substance than his usual fodder. There's a strange lightness to some of those all black looks that definitely highlight they were made on the fly using general patterns he already has, but that on the fly intuitive thinking has created pieces that are less overwrought.

Still, I'm not fully convinced. As per usual, his references are just way too obvious and gets away with it so easily. I still don't know what he actually represents as a designer, but I know what he wants to represent if that makes sense...

saw the first half and thought "no, quinn actually designed a decent collection?" and then the second half appeared. alas, i was wrong.
