River Interview for Sheer Magazine
River spent his youth in Spain and left school to become a model. He grew up around the industry as his mother was a model herself. When chatting to River it’s apparent he was keen to follow in his mother’s footsteps at the earliest opportunity. “As soon as I turned 18 I ditched school and went to London to give it a try. My mum told me it could work out for me; she used to be a model and knows about the industry so I decided to go for it.”
A brave move in such a competitive industry, it evidently paid off, demonstrating the confidence and determination which has undoubtedly played a factor in landing huge international jobs.Discussing the beginning of his career and the first major shoot he worked on, it seems that it wasn’t plain sailing from the outset “It was weird. It was a shoot for Vman with Nicola Formichetti and Hedi Slimane they had some problems shooting a celebrity; so our shoot was really rushed because they needed more time to finish their other story.”
Luckily for River his name and reputation have grown immensely and he is now more likely to be the celebrity being shot for which other models are side-lined. We chat through River’s shoot history and his favourite jobs to date.“The most fun shoot I have worked on was the CK One campaign ‘The Box’ which was actually too much fun!” Other jobs River lists as being memorable include the shoot for label and photography site bl33n with Donovan and Mathias Vriens-McGrath where he was dressed in drag for the first time.
A down to earth model that isn’t overwhelmed by working with big design labels, he openly talks about how comfortable he is ‘fooling around’ and just being his playful self around important fashion figures such as Italo Zucchelli, the menswear design director for Calvin Klein.
This may be because his passion doesn’t lie within designer clothes – which he professes to rarely wear, usually opting for casual skater attire. “I don’t really ever wear designer clothes if I do it would be YSL or Armani” This leads to conversation about River’s personal style which he laughs about. “Style? Do I have some of that? I’d call it casual, personal. I wear whatever I have handy and like at the time” It is almost admirable to be so nonchalant when working in an industry that is so much about how you look and what you wearing.
Clearly enjoying being a model and immensely proud of his achievements so far, River is also brutally honest about the drawbacks involved with the industry. He is candid about the fact that his life has changed and how he now rarely sees his loved ones, which is undoubtedly the downside to his glamorous high profile job. Despite this, he obviously recognises how lucky he is and dismisses the lows. “I don’t have time to be with my girlfriend, friends or family now.
But I work it out my way.” He describes home as his favourite place on earth and explains how he misses his family but has had to become accustomed to it.I imagine the travels to be a sacrifice many would be willing to make to become an international male model for Calvin Klein.Widely acknowledged as extremely active in social networking and giving back to his fans, River is fiercely enthusiastic about keeping in contact with the people who support him. He explains this as not only being an essential way to maintain his fan base, but also as a method of self preservation and promoting himself.
The principal way he attempts to do this is through his controversial blog ‘Never Back Down’ which he started to deny common myths about male modelling. When we discuss the blog, River clarifies that it was originally set up due to encouragement by his room mates in New York. Whilst writing is obviously a passion of his, he explains that it’s difficult to maintain with his busy schedule. “I love the blog but I haven’t had too much time to write.
That is why I started the vlogs” (That means video blogs for anyone technology shy). Due to his blogging, we ponder whether fashion writing is something River is considering as a future endeavour or potential career path, however we are shocked to learn that River’s other career interests lie in an industry vastly removed from fashion. “I’ve always been into investments as my dad used to be a broker.”
At the end of our conversation, River lets slip that he is working on a massive high profile job that is the most exciting campaign he has worked on to date. Unfortunately we cannot publish details of this, but watch this space, things are about to get even bigger for this young man.
