Its not for fashionable purposes. They put the jeans into their shoes so the ink from the denim doesn't "bleed" on their shoes.

i thought it was not to step all over the bottoms.

Oh, I thought it was so they can show off thier shoes...Why did they do it with thier khaki's at my high school?

I wouldn't know...not many people wore khaki's at my high school. But prolly so their khaki's don't drag n rip.

I think this--pinrolling--looks really great on guys (heck, the whole outfit is outstanding)... it's a fresh look at a recent trend i've been noticing with the guys--flooding pants (Ewan McGregor was styled this way in the movie Stay w/ Ryan Gosling--which is why I thought it was a trend).

and i'm almost sure that the exposure of ankles on a lot of hipsters is due to bicycle riding rather than purely fashion trend. I have to roll up my jeans when i ride my bike as well because i don't have a chainguard--and getting grease out of any kind of clothing is difficult and time-consuming to say the least. :/

and i'm pretty sure that the rubberband around the bottom of jeans and into shoes started out as a method to prevent stains on shoes first--a byproduct is showing off the shoe... as some folks already mentioned above... : )

I actually like roll-up-the-pants look. However, it's not a look that can be achieved easily. Only a few can carry it off well.

just don't do it with flairs...:ninja:...

the jeans should be straight leg or skinny for it to work...
otherwise there is too much bulk and it just looks a mess...

I still don't like it.
But maybe I'm just going through serious hipster burnout.

I completely agree. I love that outfit. Very fresh and new but classic.

I think, with most other things, it all depends on HOW you wear it. So, like most other trends (I don't know if I would really call this a trend), it depends on what you wear it with, the attitude and theme of the overall outfit.
