I own all of Sally Mann's books and the DVD of What Remains. Her work is absolutely stunning and inspiring.

I loved the DVD because not only does it show you how she works, it also shows a realistic view on the life of a fine arts photographer.

Oh, you have all her books? I have them all, except "Second Sight", her first one. Did you get "Second Sight" in more recent times, or a while back when it was less rare (and less expensive too, for that matter)?

There's some copies of "Second Sight" being sold online, but haven't found that is in good condition and at a price I can afford. I may just have to pay more than I would like, if I really want it, but sometimes patience pays off. I found "Mother Land" in almost like new condition, for the best price I'd ever seen it listed for, and signed by Sally. I'm hoping to be lucky enough to get such a deal with "Second Sight" too.

And even though I've already been rambling terribly here, I might add that yes, the DVD is amazing. I own it, as well, and have watched it numerous times. I'm always fascinated watching any artist I admire and their process of making art, "What Remains" is one of my favorites.

Recently got a scanner, so between scanning thousands of family pictures, I've been scanning some magazines, and I scanned these from an old Aperture magazine article on Jessie Mann, which featured pictures by her mother, some that I'd never seen before.

I love the one of her at age three.

I like how the cat's cradle string is carried over from 1988 to 1989. The first mentioned is framed quite beautifully, and I find it rather interesting that Sally has herself almost cut out of a few of these photos. And I love Jessie's stance in the 89 photo.

1992 and 1993 are especially beautiful. I like that the camera was moved back so far in the 93 photo, gives the series a fresh perspective.

Never realized the full episode of Art21, with her in it, is online. You can watch it here or here, but I'm afraid that the videos only work if you're in the U.S., least I think so. One is via Hulu, and I know Hulu only works for the U.S. She comes in at about 14 minutes into the video. It's really interesting to watch her work, and hear her talk about her process, telling stories, etc... also in the episode are her three kids, all grown up.

Thanks Susanna-Cole for all these lovely pictures, i just discovered her work and usually I'm not at all a fan of children photograhy, this is something else. Love it!

^^You're welcome! And yes, I'm the same, I don't know, kids can be lovely, but mostly I don't find them that interesting of subjects for photographs. I think Sally's children were/are exceptions and exceptional though, as is her work, of course.

this may sound weird..i've loved, loved, lovedddd her work for such a long time now but i'm kind of tired of people talking about how amazing she is because I feel like that's such an understatement..it's like no one can be good as her, we get it.

^^Yeah, I kind of know what you mean ... In my opinion, Sally is in a class of her own, I think the best always are, and it's not that there aren't other brilliant photographs, but I don't think you can just compare them to one other that's the thing. And frankly, I almost get annoyed when just anyone compares a photo/a photographer to Sally, cause I don't think any of them come close to being worthy of comparison to her. But maybe I'm just biased now!

I think this is one of my favorite photos she's done, abosutely ethereal!

^exactly & thanks for sharing, i've never seen that shot before. Have you (or anyone here) seen her At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women series? It's one of her most earliest works; she was working on it while she was doing Immediate Family but I think it was released before Immediate Family. I dont think it received as much acclaim, but it's one of her most though provoking series IMO about the unsettling transition into womenhood/adulthood and how early it begins.
