Shannon creates an ideal of beauty that’s not about eating disorders or airbrushing, but that’s about being her true androgynous self. Not holding back an ounce, Shannon shares the pain of a lost childhood, having been abused by her dad and emotionally abandoned by her mom. She’s heroically worked her way through bulimia, anorexia, and a boyfriend who mirrored her father’s destructive behavior. For us, one of the most piercing moments is when Shannon tells about her mom confessing to her while she was in rehab: ‘I know I didn’t say I love you enough, I know I didn’t hug you enough, and I’m sorry.’ Today, positive and healthy, Shannon is nobody’s doormat, stating, “If something in my life doesn’t make me happy, then it’s not there anymore.
