Snow White Film Thread

I don't know if I'm going to see this film. It doesn't look very good aside from perhaps action and special effects, and I'm not a big fan of Stewart. But that song right there, is epic. Just downloaded to my mp3 player and I can't stop listening to it. Love Florence. :crush:

Cant wait to see the Charlize Theron snow white it seems darker than the other one

the embargo on SWATH reviews has been lifted. from those i've read, kristen and charlize got really good reviews for their acting (kristen esp for her accent, which kinda surprises me). the movie is getting okay reviews i guess, nothing outstanding - mostly 3 out of 5 stars (with everyone talking about amazing visuals, but not a good flow in the movie).

i've seen the movie. hm.
first of - acting is really good, charlize tends to scream more than needed (and i was tad underwhelmed with her overall), kristen for some reason got the accent spot on (from what my ears could hear, but i'm not a native speaker) and was pleasantly surprised how she acted (not one lip bite or that excessive winking, quite the opposite, mild and calm and i had goosebumps with "the speech" she gives). chris hemsworth is okay i guess, sam was good.

COSTUMES! colleen'sgoing to get nominated without any doubt in the next award season, if not win them all (i'm puttin down a bet ). my god, those costumes on charlize were stunning, have no words. kristen's dress was so understated to exposure the difference. seriously, costumes...

movie overall - visually stunning, dwarfs were really good, there's not a bad element to a story BUT somehow the dynamic is not quite there. in the end you have a feeling like something's missing in this whole picture, i'm guessing this shows it's sanders' first movie after all. it's a good movie overall, worth seeing, but it's not extraordinary nor is it bad (despite of the fact i haven't seen as aesthetically pleasing movie as this one is in a while). it's just lacking something, dynamic was wrong i guess..either way, go see it, you won't be sorry. :)

i just saw the movie yesterday. I LOVED it. The visuals were really really stunning. The castle, the forest, the fairyland (I could seriously live there).
THe strongest part of the film was the beginning, until ravenna takes over.
The performance of Chris Hemsworth and the prince (no idea what his real name is) were also good. I was a tad disappointed by charlize tbh...her maniacal reactions were not really believable...but I can forgive her...she is "the fairest of them all" for me. Which brings me to Kristen Stewart. She was not that bad, just her motivational speech in the end was ridiculous and totally not convincing (for me at least). For some reason her face seems stunned in one single expression (she laughs twice), but I guess that as long as she sticks with roles that allow her to be stressed/anguished/unhappy most of the scenes it won't bother the audience so much.

I am going to keep an eye on sanders' next movies.

i know right? she speaks calmly and just out of nowhere yells for no real reason. i dunno what's up with that? it really seemed unconvincing at times.

on the other hand, i liked kristen's performance, i didn't see it as "one single expression" tbh (after awhile i actually saw a real pallette of emotions put out by her), but agree to disagree.:flower:

another thing that bugged me was how awful was chris' accent..so weird.

i'm gonna comment on the BO over here:
According to Deadline SWATH did around $56 million at the BO which is great. It needed to have those type of numbers because of it's budget. I hope it has the legs to continue to do well.
^the reviews are quite bad and word of mouth if even worse. it had no competition this weekend, so those numbers were to be expected, but with Prometheus and Madagascar 3 opening next weekend, i doubt it will continue to make big amounts of money

i'd say that MIB3 was quite a competition since the movie is only in its second weekend at the boxoffice (and it got nice reactions to it). 56 million is really an okay start, the reviews are mixed, but i'm sure that they're at least gonna bring back the money they invested with international releases (i don't think they'll manage to gain any real profit, tho). the other two movies aren't targeting the same public, but the word of mouth might be crucial for the next few weeks, most def (which might turn bad for prometheus too cus the initial reaction from the parts of the world that started screening the movie so far is very bad).

I think Prometheus could take some of SW potential box office. If we take the UK for example, Universal moved SW to the 30th in order to get a headstart on the BO but it was still completely obliterated by Prometheus which was released just two days after, SW got about $5.5M for 5 days and Prometheus in less time got $9.9M.

I watched SW and it was a bit underwhelming. I only truly enjoyed the film when the dwarves were there as they added humour and soul to the movie and I just loved Ray Winstone and Nick Frost. Out of the leads I have to say surprisingly Chris was the best, despite his patchy accent, as his emotion was palpable. If they do a sequel they need to give Kristen more to do as it seemed they didn't delve much into Snow as a character and that hindered the whole film.

i think that the characters in general were lacking some development, no? you don't really get why queen would hate sw from that one wedding scene, no? i mean, you get the general idea, but it was way to general, no?

prometheus is def going to be hard to beat next weekend money wise. it has a strong fan base and it's hyped till no end (which is something sw doesn't have, well apart from being hyped up too), but i don't think they target the same public.

Definitely needed more character development, a better script, and a director who didn't just rely on visuals. I did love the costumes though. Ravenna's final one was just incredible and apparently it was made from real beetle wings!

ETA The Hollywood Reporter has an interesting article on the Snow White Box Office. The comments are talking about a 9 figure marketing spend so it must have been in the article before they cut it out.

Universal's marketing operation is being praised by rival studios for succeeding in piquing the interest of males on the eve of Snow White's opening. The action-packed film needed both sexes to succeed and was never designed to appeal only to femmes. Exit polling revealed that females made up 53 percent of the opening weekend audience in North America, while males made up 47 percent.
Snow White did skew older, with 56 percent of the audience over the age of 25 and 52 percent over the age of 30. The film's B CinemaScore didn't appear to slow down the film, which was up on Saturday.

This was so disappointing.. the visuals were awesome and Charlize was somewhat entertaining but that was about it.

Stewart as bas as she was in Twilight.. at least here she didn't speak much which was good. Hemsworth is far from a star and the script was awful. But at least with better actors it could have been elevated but alas.

I doubt this will have much legs.. it will probably make it's budget back but I don't see it being a real money maker

^90% of the reviews i've read said that Kristen was her old mopey self and that her speech at the end was terribly cringeworthy. also her accent was apparently all over the place, but i don't know, i won't waste my money on this, i'll wait till it's out on DVD

i would watch it for Hemsworth as he's super hot in this, but meh, i think i'll wait for Cabin in the woods (it's not out here yet)

+1

The movie was really hyped too much and well handled promo wise but it's not epic a la LOTR or other saga as they tried to sell it. It didn't look epic/revolutionary on set so I really couldn't understand how epic it could have looked epic/revolutionary in the theatre. Well, at least for me it didn't.

Even more happy now that Viggo dropped out.

It was:shock:, It really was. I think she might be to concerned with trying to come off as natural on screen that she forgets to act.

But honestly, Hemsworth is also very overrated. I don't think he brought anything to the character.

I wonder if they are really going to go ahead with the sequel? For the people that have seen it do you think they can really do a trilogy with this series?

^from what i've read possible sequels would rather be queen-prequels or something. i believe they never planned another movie focussing on snow

I don't see how they could but seems like it may really be happening with a focus on Chris character.

I came to the same conclusion. She is too self aware when she acts. That's why a lot of people can't connect imo...

I really can't see a sequel or a prequel happening as it was that disappointing but I would not be adverse to a film that focuses on the dwarves as I like them. If the cast and crew sign up to one it will be for money and not the storyline that's for sure.

Thinking about it, it was a shame that the Prince wasn't featured more as Sam gave a better performance than the three leads.

Has anyone seen Mirror, Mirror? anything interesting to comment?

tbh, i find kristen the only one with the consistent acting throughout the movie and her accent was the only one going on solidly (just so we're clear, till this day the only role i find kristen's acting good was in the runaways and now in this). i was legit surprised how well she did it having in mind twilight and her other work. if anything else (since acting is a subjective thing), her accent was spot on so i really don't get the criticism of it (and from the reviews i've read, if anything, they did say only positive stuff about it).
charlize was not so good cus she was all over the place with the constant yelling so at points she seemed plain silly, chris's accent was awful and all over the place (then again, i found thor to be weakest of the dc comics movies due to his and natalie's acting). in general, i think it's just the rookie direction and possibly not knowing how to direct actors with a script that had holes?! personally, i just started thinking about it after a while, the whole movie just doesn't stick with you after you leave the cinema....

the sequels i saw talked about year ago had snow white in plan - i think they also started with snow white and .... but i can't remember how they were called. i can see where it could be heading with her - probably in regards to her reigning the kingdom and obstacles she might have...it's not hard to imagine, tbh, but that's just me obv. i think kristen did sign up for a possible trilogy.
