Congrats to Sofia! I'm actually surprised, the reviews I read were not very complimentary. I can't wait to see it.

Yeah, I saw where the press is claiming that, but the jury's decision was unanimous as far as the golden lion was concerned, so she won it fair and square.

I agree! The cinema industry is a small world and jury members in festivals are all likely to have worked / be friends with someone who has a film in competition, so this case is not different than others. And anyway it's a jury decision so it's not like Tarantino took it by himself.

I don't quite understand why people are saying the reviews were negative. I would say they were mixed more than anything. I think the Americans warmed to it more, though. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter had very good things to say about it.

from what i got the main reason why everyone's so suspicious of her win is due to uncommon "dealing" of the awards - Iglesia's movie got the GL for the screenplay and best director and she got it "only" for best movie. anyhow, this year's Venice wasn't too diverse or original judging by the critics, so it's not like she had, with few exceptions, too strong competition.

YAY!! Sofia is just on a roll right now; the dress for the awards was lovely. Thomas and Romy are lovely. She's thoughtful and talented and stylish! Wonderful.

Here's the full version of the Stroke's demo she used in "Somewhere" - it makes me tear up. Beautiful taste in music too. I think Sofia's work is more visceral and visual than cerebral. It doesn't tap into that talky vibe, but it gives you a gut-check and captures wistfulness so well.
