- french bands AIR and PHOENIX are making cameos in Marie Antoinette. one in a party scene, the others as the queen's musicians.
- one of the biggest reference in the film are Ladurée macaroons (especially pistachio, raspberry and lemon), who inspired the costumes and décor. there was a team taking care of all the cakes during shooting.
- about sex on screen (in MA): "i didn't want to show Rip (Torn, as Louis XVI) and Asia (Argento, as La du Barry) making love."
- Kirsten Dunst doesn't wear a wig in the film, it's her real hair. extensions and dry shampoo were used to create the "swollen" effect. took 2 hours each day.
- on Alain Delon refusing the part of Louis XV: "i don't want to talk about it. i leave it up to Alain Delon. it's too bad, Marianne Faithfull, with who he did 'La Motocyclette' in 68, had pretty fun stories about him. but he didn't want to join us."
- on growing up: "directing helped me understand who i am. i even think my movies follow my personal evolution. VS, LIT and MA form a trilogy about going from young girl state to womanhood. in MA, the character grows up. i'm done with all that. well, let's hope so...".
- "on MA, i wanted to keep historic facts while making the movie my own way. my brother Roman showed me 'Lisztomania'. Ken Russel shot Franz Liszt as a rockstar who drinks Coca-cola, eats ice creams and is chased by paparazzis. it's an approach way more excessive than my own, but who confort me about taking liberties (with the story). all is a question of balance. as long as it doesn't distract the viewer's attention, it's doesn't bother me. in the 18th century, for example, you didn't show your arms, on the contrary of what you see in the opening sequence. i also imagined that like me, Marie-Antoinette was playing the Post-it game with her friends. they had paper and pens...".
